Horror Nights: Rate my Winter horror game lineup and tell me what I am missing?

Horror Nights: Rate my Winter horror game lineup and tell me what I am missing?

I have been working on this winter horror project for a while now and gaming is the next piece of the puzzle. I already have my movie lineup sorted and now I am moving to games. The idea is simple. I want to spend the cold months consuming as much horror as I can across movies, games, books, and TV shows. Gaming is probably the biggest commitment because these are not two hour experiences. These are ten to twenty hour journeys that require actual attention and engagement.

The thing is, I am not a horror veteran. I am what you would call a scaredy cat. I get tense easily and I have a low tolerance for pure dread. But I also feel like I am missing out on some of the best storytelling in the medium. I want to push myself and actually experience what survival horror and psychological horror have to offer. I am not trying to traumatize myself but I am open to being genuinely scared in a way that feels rewarding afterward.

I put together a list of ten games based purely on trailers, descriptions, and general reputation. I did not dig into spoilers or watch full playthroughs. I just followed my gut and picked the ones that gave me that curious feeling. I made a visual grid on Topster so I could see all the covers together and it looks really clean. I have attached the image so you can see exactly what I am working with.

A few extra details for context. Resident Evil 1 Remake on PC and if I enjoy it, I plan to work through the rest of the series in order. The same goes for Silent Hill and The Evil Within. Winter is long and I am not in a rush. For the PS2 classics, I am using PCSX2 emulator so any other PS2 Games is good.

I am not worried about frustration or difficulty. I can handle clunky controls and obtuse puzzles. I am okay with looking up a guide if I get stuck. My main concern is the fear factor. I want to know if any of these games are going to completely break me in a way that is not fun. I am okay with being uncomfortable but I do not want to feel genuinely traumatized or so stressed that I quit the whole project.

I am planning to start this around late September, probably between the twenty first and the twenty sixth. I have my Notion database already set up with checkboxes and notes so I can track my progress and look back at the end of winter with some nostalgia.

The list is not set in stone. I am here for genuine opinions and I am completely open to swapping things in and out.

Here is what I want to know from you. Is this a solid starting point for someone who is new to horror games but wants to take it seriously? Are there any games on my list that you think are too intense for a beginner? Are there any that have aged poorly and might be more frustrating than scary? And most importantly, am I missing something essential?

I feel like there are some absolute classics that every horror gaming beginner should experience and I might have overlooked them because I am new.

I appreciate anyone who takes the time to look at my list and share their thoughts. I am genuinely excited about this and I want to make sure I am going into it with the best possible lineup. Let me know what you think.

Horror Nights: Rate my Winter lineup and tell me what I am missing?

I have been sitting on this idea for a while and I finally want to make it happen. This winter I want to do something different. Instead of sticking to my usual comfort zone, I want to fully commit to a horror theme across movies, games, books, and TV shows. I am starting with movies because they feel like the easiest entry point and I want to build momentum before I dive into longer things.

The thing is, I am not a horror veteran. I am what you would call a scaredy cat. I get tense during suspenseful scenes and I have a low tolerance for pure dread. But I also feel like I am missing out on an entire world of storytelling and atmosphere. I want to venture outside my comfort zone and actually experience what the genre has to offer. I am not looking to traumatize myself but I am open to being genuinely scared in a way that feels rewarding afterward.

I put together a list of ten movies based purely on trailers and descriptions. I did not read spoilers or dig into reviews. I just followed my gut and picked the ones that gave me that curious feeling. I made a visual grid on Topster so I could see all the covers together and it looks really clean. I have attached the image so you can see exactly what I am working with. I have a mix of older classics, foreign films, found footage, and psychological horror. I tried to give myself variety so I am not just getting the same flavor of scares over and over.

Here is what I want to know from you;

Is this a solid starting point for someone who is new to horror but wants to take it seriously? Are there any movies on my list that you think are going to ruin my week in a way that is not fun?

I am okay with being uncomfortable but I do not want to feel genuinely traumatized or disgusted to the point where I regret starting this project. I also want to know if I am missing something essential. I feel like there are some absolute classics that every horror beginner should see and I might have overlooked them because I am new and I do not know what to look for.

I am planning to start this around late September, probably between the twenty first and the twenty sixth. I know August is early but I like having everything prepared ahead of time. I am using Notion to track my progress with checkboxes and notes so I can look back at the end of winter and remember what I watched and how I felt. I already built out the database and the only thing left is to finalize the list.

Please keep in mind that this list is not set in stone.

I am here for genuine opinions and I am completely open to swapping things in and out based on what you tell me. If there is a movie you think absolutely belongs here, tell me. If there is a movie you think I should move to the very end of my season because it is too intense for a beginner, tell me that too. I want to build something where in the future, i look back at this time and reminisce a winter filled with Horror!

I appreciate anyone who takes the time to look at my list and share their thoughts. I am genuinely excited about this and I want to make sure I am going into it with the best possible lineup.

Afraid of Ruining SH2R…Should I play SH1 / 3 First?

I can’t stop overthinking this...it feels like whichever Silent Hill I play first will define how I experience the series, and I’m terrified of messing up that emotional impact.

Deep down, I want my first Silent Hill to be the Silent Hill 2 Remake because I’m chasing that emotional payoff everyone talks about. But my PC only has integrated graphics, so SH2R is basically out of reach unless I upgrade or get a PS5. That leaves me with the older games through emulation.

I’ve been really drawn to Silent Hill 1 and Silent Hill 3, especially because I’ve heard SH3 has that father‑daughter dynamic, which honestly makes me want to dive in even more. I don’t mind that they’re old as I can handle dated visuals if the story and atmosphere are strong. The comparison I saw was between the OG SH2 and SH2R and i really liked the Remake, not SH1, so I’m not worried about SH1 being “ruined” for me Still, I’m stuck in this emotional tug‑of‑war. Part of me wants to wait, to hold off until I can play SH2R first and let it hit me with the full impact it deserves. But another part of me feels like playing SH1 and SH3 now could actually enhance that experience later, giving me more context and appreciation for the series as a whole. I just don’t want to ruin the magic I want to build toward it.

At the end of the day, I just want my first Silent Hill to feel unforgettable, not compromised.

Whether that means waiting for SH2R or diving into SH1 and SH3 now, I’m hoping to hear from people who’ve walked this path before what did you choose, and how did it shape your experience? And what do you think about playing both the OG and the remake like did you wished you play the other or does it deepen the experience, or does it take something away?

Finished Route A of Replicant ver.1.22, but lost access. Will switching to Gestalt ruin the experience?

Hey everyone, I’m in a bizarre situation with NieR and need some community advice.

I finished Ending A of NieR Replicant ver.1.22 and loved it. Right as I was about to start Route B (Emil's part), I suddenly lost access to the game. However, I do have an emulator set up and have full access to the original NieR Gestalt.

I don't mind the older 2010 controls or replaying Route A at all. My plan is actually to replay ver.1.22 from the beginning one day anyway to experience it properly.

My main question right now is: Is it okay for me to switch to Gestalt right now and still have a great experience, or should I just wait it out until I can get my hands on Replicant ver.1.22 again?

I really want to keep going with the story, but I'm worried that switching from Brother Nier to Father Nier mid-game might make the narrative feel too disjointed or mess with the emotional payoff of Route B and onwards.

Has anyone else ever swapped versions like this? Should I jump into Gestalt or wait?

[For The First Time] Just Finished NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139...and wow!

Currently, I’m a little burned out, and yes, the game can feel slow at times… but it’s still a 10/10 MASTERPIECE!

Especially the music as it’s literally perfect in every way. I spent countless minutes just standing outside the tavern, listening to her sing. What I thought was wasted time turned out to be some of the most beautiful moments I’ve had in a game.

SPOILERS AHEAD

>!I was unfortunately spoiled about the fight with the twin red-haired sisters, so I didn’t get the shocking reveal I wished for. Still, the scene hit hard as I couldn’t believe it had to end that way and it left me genuinely sad.!<

>!What broke me even more was the King, knowing he was about to die, yet still choosing to fight. That almost made me cry. And Emil… seeing him act so brave while secretly terrified, admitting he wants to live and not die that tore a hole in my chest. Now I’m supposed to play his route, and I know it’s going to be painful. I just hope I don’t have to play Kaine’s right after, because following Emil’s story would hit the hardest.!<

>!I also realized that the brother and sister from the tutorial area are the ones who appear in the final mission not Yonah and the Nier I was playing as. I kind of wish I could have experienced their full story.!<

>!It makes me grieve that one brother turned into a Shade but chose to protect his sister from the same fate, while another brother saw his own sister consumed by darkness and swore to save her. That parallel is devastating.!<

>!NIER…no, YOKO TARO IS PEAK!!<

>!(I haven’t read the documents the game provides after the final fight, so bear with me on this section!)!<

Overall it drags a little but everything about is PEAK FICTION!

[The Evil Within OR Silent Hill 2 Remake] I want to start getting into horror games and need advise on which game to start with.

To the people who played these two games, if i were to give you the option to go back in time and play any one of these games for the FIRST time ever again, which one with all your current knowledge and experience would you choose to start with?

I am like Scardy cat when it comes to horror games and cant handle much horror at all… BUT THEN AGAIN i REALLY love that feeling when i am scared. Like there is just something about that feeling and experience that you never really get or feel most of the time. As much as i try my best to avoid it, i also want to seek it at the same time for the sake of the thriller and tension alone. Hopefully some of you understand what i mean lol.

Anyways, both games look REALLY interesting to me because i love the idea of playing as a cop/detective type of character and slowly uncovering the horrors that await me in The Evil Within and the atmosphere in both games just looks insane.

Now for S H 2 R… yeah i kinda spoiled myself like an IDIOT.

Spoilers for Silent Hill 2 Remake:

**>!**I know James kills his wife Mary or something like that? I heard maybe he did it because he was angry, tired, broken mentally, or maybe even at himself. I also heard Mary only had like a week left before she died naturally and maybe he should’ve just waited but didn’t, and now he feels guilt and wants punishment or something. BUT the thing is… i genuinely don't know how much of that is actually true and how much i completely misunderstood from random spoilers online. AND SOMEHOW even after spoiling myself i STILL want to play the game, maybe even MORE now because i want to know the WHY behind everything. Like just because i know the recipe doesn't mean i cooked the dish you know?!<

I am literally Knee deep on BOTH of them 50/50 right now and i can probably get both eventually too, but i really want to know which one you guys think i should start with FIRST as someone who is trying to get into horror games.

First time playing NieR Replicant & need some guidance for the later endings/weapons

Hey everyone, I’m currently playing NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139. for the first time and I’ve reached a point where enemies are starting to hit noticeably harder, so I feel a little lost on what I should actually be focusing on progression-wise.

Up until now I haven’t really done many side quests because, honestly, some of them felt a bit repetitive to me. But then there were moments like the quest with the two red-haired sisters singing in the tavern, and that completely reminded me why I’m loving this game so much. That whole sequence genuinely stuck with me.

Now I’m wondering if I should start taking side quests more seriously, especially because I’ve heard that collecting all weapons is important for unlocking the later endings, I think C/D/E. I’ve been trying to collect every weapon I come across, but I’m not sure if I should also be grinding materials and upgrading them right now or if that’s something better saved for later.

I mainly just want some spoiler-free guidance from people who’ve already gone through the game. I want the smoothest experience possible while going for all the endings without accidentally missing important stuff or making the game way harder for myself later on. I don’t mind putting in effort, I just don’t want to waste time grinding things that aren’t really necessary.

Would appreciate any advice from veterans of the game.

A weird title I know but I really need to share my thoughts.

Many moons ago I played Automata for the first time. The farthest I got was the Abandoned Mall area. I reached the part where that weird talking robot head breaks through a wall! I was supposed to follow it but life got in the way and I sadly had to drop the game.

Fast forward to today and I finally bought both games. I am playing Replicant ver.1.22474487139 right now. I just cannot help but worry I might be ruining things. I heard people say that Replicant spoils Automata and I also heard Automata spoils Replicant. I am just trying to figure out which path is the lesser evil!

Even though I did not finish Automata I already know it is a P R I M Example of a 10/10 masterpiece. But I am absolutely falling in love with Replicant!

I find the combat here so incredibly satisfying. Automata has more quantity but every hit in Replicant just feels so personal and good. And the OST touches my soul. Automata has this grand epic history to its music. Replicant feels so intimate! When I step out into the village the music makes me want to just live in that social moment and embrace it. I do kind of wish I was playing as Papa Nier since I am following another game called Pragmata with a similar dad protector vibe but I still feel so connected to this story.

I just finished the Sand Kingdom and a sudden heavy realization hit me. Automata takes place thousands of years in the future. I do not want to leave this world! I have gotten so incredibly attached to these people. I want to explore my village more and hear new stories.

I want to spend more time in that beautiful ocean town. The sudden thought of finishing this game and jumping thousands of years forward into Automata feels so incredibly heartbreaking to me. Everyone I know will be gone. I know the characters in Automata are just AI but I feel a real human connection to this current world and leaving it behind just feels wrong and hurts!

I might be rambling but I recently FINISHED Witcher 3. I know that game is a perfect 10/10 but I did not read the books or play the first two games. Because I lacked that history my personal experience sadly dropped to an 8/10. I missed that deep emotional foundation!

I am playing Replicant now because I refuse to make that same mistake again. I want to experience this beautiful masterpiece to the absolute fullest!

Right now I am just telling myself to imagine this game released today and Automata drops next year. I hope I made the right choice playing Replicant first and I hope this will make my Automata playthrough even more beautiful!
