Interesting update on G&L Pickups from Mighty Mite

I emailed Mighty Mite asking if they had any Will Ray Z-Coils, and got this response:

"Unfortunately, we sold out of our limited stock of Will Ray Z-coils very quickly. However, Mighty Mite did also acquire all of G&L's pickup manufacturing equipment along with their remaining parts inventory. We are still in the early planning stages, but we hope to have our own pickup manufacturing facility up and running sometime in 2027 using all of G&L's original tooling and machines! So in the not too distant future, we will be able to wind and make G&L pickups the exact same way they were made in Fullerton California. Wish I could deliver better news, but there is hope on the horizon!"

Stay tuned, I suppose!

CLF Research Skyhawk vs S-500?

To those who may know - besides the shape, were there any differences with the late BBE-era CLF Research Skyhawk and the BBE-era S-500?

I like the idea of the expander switch on a classic 80s Leo shape, but curious if the Skyhawk had the same MFDs as the S-500?

Also, debating whether I should get one, given that I have a Comanche, but that's a different issue!

When to use ZP6 vs Ode 2?

I have both grinders - and when I got the ZP6 it was a revelation - the first time I used it, bright fruity notes just jumped out of the coffee (I love that).

I feel like I buy pretty good coffees, that seem like they're made for a grinder that prioritizes clarity.

But the last few bags of beans haven't blown me away, and I just ran my current ones through the Ode 2, and it's so much more enjoyable - sweeter, less bitter, fuller body (that last part I expected)

For reference this is what I've got now: https://others.coffee/products/light-work-light-peru-copy

Some of the ones that worked well with the ZP6 were from S&W and Black & White (I can't remember which)

My question is, is there a way to predict what beans will work well with the ZP6 and which ones I should stick to the Ode 2?

Kyoto Cold Drip?

https://preview.redd.it/bc89bq2xbleh1.png?width=1426&format=png&auto=webp&s=7871ccee347ad81d696a8569d4f7a0ff54ca1714

I've got one of these Hario cold drip rigs, because I keep hearing how cold drip is the ultimate cold coffee. Unfortunately, even in Washington, DC, where I live, there isn't a single shop with this kind of setup. Meanwhile I've been unable to find any consensus online about the best grind size and ratios to use.

I've tended to go pretty coarse, doing a bloom/saturation over the sink to ensure all the grounds are wet, then put the paper filter on top and drip 12x the weight in ice water over the next several hours.

No matter how many variables I tweak, it's tending to come out bitter. One thing I like about cold brew coffee is that it can be quite rich and sweet, so if anyone has any tips for a cold drip setup, please let me know. I'd be open to experiment a lot more, but it uses up a lot of coffee, unlike doing multiple tries with 15g in a pourover.

Thanks!

New Martin Day and Martin Factory Tour

Yesterday I visited the Martin factory in Nazareth - I had posted that it's the neighboring town to where my late dad grew up in, and though I'm the only guitar player in the family, it felt appropriate to go, also given his German Moravian ancestry and the German and Moravian heritage of Nazareth, PA.

The self-guided museum was extremely cool - I didn't take a lot of photos, but the collection on display was incredible. Funnily enough, they had Hank Williams's D-18 hanging in a case, and when I went back to take a photo of it, it had been removed!

I then hung out in the Picking Parlor playing several different Nazareth-made models, and definitely heard the differences between the D-18 and 28, as well as the OM, 00, and 000 models but was as yet undecided to which I liked more. I thought I'd find the Dreadnoughts too large, but at 6'1", it wasn't really a big issue for me.

I had some time to kill before my factory tour, so went down to Nazareth Music Center and auditioned several more dreadnoughts in a more peaceful setting, before finding an HD-28 that really hit the mark for me. To me, it combined the richness of the D-28, with the clear highs of the D-18 and 00/000-18. They showed me their price list, and everything was $400-500 less than Martin's list price, so I walked out the door with the HD-28!

Then I went back for the factory tour, and I was very impressed. As people have said, the smell was incredible, and it's clear that Martin really is tied to the community of Nazareth. It was also really cool to see how much is still done by hand, and some of the custom work was gorgeous.

Anyway, happy to join the Martin family!

Martin Factory Visit?

Hi,

I'm primarily an electric player, but have been considering getting a Martin acoustic - my dad passed away recently, and while he didn't play guitar, he did get me into music, and he grew up not far from Nazareth, PA.

I'm spending a week in that general region and was wondering if the Martin factory was worth a visit - not sure if I'd do the paid tour, but maybe the free tour and museum? And are there any special guitars available in the shop there, and is it cheaper buying direct from them?

Thanks!

▲ 66 r/rum

Undercurrent, Brooklyn

The hype is real! Paul Mcgee is a wonderful host, and his personal rum collection is magnificent and also all available to pour. Meanwhile the Mai Tai upstairs at Echo Lake was superb.

And yes, that 1946 Bacardi made the best daiquiri I’ve ever had, and sipped neat had so much flavor

New 1998 Blueburst Comanche, and a couple questions

Just in from Reverb in probably the quickest delivery time ever - a 98 Comanche in Blueburst. I've been looking for one of these ever since I got my 86 ASAT, sucked into the rabbit hole of powerful MFD pickups and the promise of a vibrato that actually works well.

Since the whole Fender corporate debacle of late, I've been looking extra hard for deals on other, non-FMIC Leo-designed guitars, and a found this Comanche with a motivated seller who was willing to make a deal. It's gorgeous - lots of birdseye in the neck, and overall it seems like it's barely been played.

Two questions:

I've seen some info online saying that 1998 was the first year of full production of the Comanche? I know Leo Fender designed the first Comanche right at the end of his life, but was that just a limited run? Interestingly, on the manual, the S/N is written down, along with the years 1997 and 1998. I haven't taken the guitar apart, but does that mean the body was made in one year and the neck in another?

Also, the vibrato is super duper stiff. Way more than any Fender whammy system. I'm not sure what gauge the strings are (they feel like 9s?), and there are 3 springs in the back, but DAMN, it takes some force to move the bar.

NSGD! 1978 SG2000

Just arrived from Japan, a one-owner 1978 SG2000. I got it a great price for not being in perfectly immaculate condition, but it's a super solid player-condition guitar! Two of the knobs are missing the top labels, and the bridge is pretty pitted, it needs a setup, and there's belt buckle rash, but overall it's in great shape.

The craftsmanship is excellent. There appears to be one mod - the bridge tone knob has a push-push pot that appears to do a coil split or series/parallel switching for BOTH pickups. I know after 1980 they had push-push on each tone pot for each pickup - this must be a mod of some kind. I sort of wish it was per pickup, but it's still pretty cool to have some extra versatility in the sound.

And what a sound it is. I haven't put it through all its paces yet, but the pickups sound great, and the tone is rich and full, and the reputation for sustain is true. Notes just keep going. I can see why in the 1970s this was called a Les Paul Killer. I have a superb replica LP, and I wouldn't say it "kills" that, but put against its contemporaries from Norlin, it makes sense.

Weight is 10.00 lbs /4.536 kg, which actually seems to be on the light end for these. Very comfy with the belly cut, no neck dive using a suede strap.

Overall, a great stablemate for its SG-5 older sibling !

Small 1x12 cab?

I have an Egnater Tweaker 112 with a Celestion G12H30 in it - great cab, but I need something a little bit smaller to fit in a particular space. I noticed most 1x12 are about 20" or more wide, with only very few about 15-17" wide, which is what I need.

Are there any smaller ones you'd recommend, and iIs there any advantage to a physically larger cabinet for a given speaker size?

F-100 and MM Sabre - also guitarsbyleo.com down?

Hey everyone,

With all the recent shenanigans from FMIC, I'm looking for another guitar made under Leo's watch (already got a 1986 ASAT). My eye has been turned to both the F-100 and the late 70s Music Man Sabre I or II.

They seem like preetttty much the same guitar - the G&L has no picgkuard, optional vibrato, optional active electronics, and I guess the humbuckers are adjustable MFDs? Whereas the Sabre has non MFD buckers, active electronics, string through standard bridge, and a cool black pickguard. Also it seems more of the MMs had a maple neck vs roughly even split of maple and ebony on the F-100. Am I missing anything else?

Also, does anybody know anything about guitarsbyleo.com down? I've been getting an error every time I try to access it.

New (to me) 1967 SG-5

Received it yesterday in shockingly excellent condition given it’s 59 years old. It even came with the original strap!

Plays and feels great, the neck pickups sounds KILLER. Whammy bar works and it stays in tune! This may replace my Strat….pure single coil sound with vintage Fender radius but Gibson scale length - love it.

If anybody knows about the electronics on these, I have some questions about the pickups, etc:

1 (neck) is very loud, with over 10k resistance

2 (middle) is quite a bit quieter, but mid 9k resistance

3 (bridge) is almost as loud as 1, but also mid 9k

1+2 is just under 5k. Relatively quiet

1 + 3 also just under 5k. Relatively loud

2+3 blended reads nothing in the middle of the sweep (!), tone described below.

1 + 2/3 blended is high 9k.

The sound of 2 by itself is low output, and kind of Strat-quacky. Funny given it reads the same as pickup 3, which is much louder.

When blended with 3, it's similarly quiet, but cancels hum, and sounds like a tone knob has been turned down - much more bass, less treble.

Any ideas what could be going on?
