American Football covers The Cure for SiriusXMU
10/10 no notes. Hearing the band play acoustically is a real treat. The only other cover they've ever done is the Mazzy Star one, so this is pretty fucking awesome.

By Surprise is playing a 20th anniversary show in Philly October 10th. ‘Mountain Smashers’ is one of my favorite Topshelf releases and “Realometer” is the shit.
This gem was sitting on Marketplace for 20 weeks! Got it for a fair asking price of $225. Can’t wait to use the Gain channel exclusively!

This is fucking AWESOME
New album announced today on Polyvinyl. This video is SO weird and cool**.** It’s like a glitched out, retro-futurist fever dream. Dystopian A.I. / Technofeudalism inspired graphics giving some serious early 90s “Virtual Reality” vibes, a la Lawnmower Man (1992) starring Pierce Brosnan.
Mike’s board has the volume and expression pedals, while Holmes’ is with The One with the Tube Screamer.
I’ve got this bad boy in the works so that I can run it into the back of my Behringer Boogerfooger Delay. The thought is that this will help me achieve a Temu Tom Scholz ‘hyperspace’ sound while using the MXR Rockman X100. The BM14-M has several CV inputs, so I’ll use this to control Feedback, Time, LFO Rate, and/or Mix.
I’ve secured two dual-gang 10K pots to a piece of aluminum stripping from the hardware store, and will secure this to the inside using short rivets. I’ll cut open two rectangles for the tops of the knobs to jut through, similar to the (much more ruggedly built) Chase Bliss EXP.
I’ve purchased 4 DPDT On/On Taiway switches to control the polarity of 4 TRS Input Jacks, each connecting to one gang of the two pots. My question, as someone who knows nothing about how to wire this correctly just yet—is there anything else I should consider doing here to make this better? I’m a novice.
Adjacent to this — Chris DiPinto wired a delay circuit to the Momentary Open inside of a Crybaby (HERE) that’s worth checking out. However, THIS DUDE really nailed it using a dual axis pedal, and I’m in awe of his quest.
I found out that the band's WXPN Free at Noon in Philly with Greg Mendez is going to be turned into an American Football episode of the NPR program World Cafe. They did a seven song set live on the radio, mostly focused on LP4, but did "Never Meant" and the encore (not broadcasted) was "Honestly?" There's going to be an interview with the band for it too. I went to the show and it was really amazing.
WXPN is a public radio station in Philadelphia who produce the NPR music interview program, World Cafe. Every Friday, they have a free hour long concert in their building that you RSVP for, and it happens LIVE on the radio.
Greg is playing the First Unitarian Church the same night as AF at Franklin Music Hall, so this is a big deal for anyone who is stuck deciding between which show to see. They’ll both play 30 minute sets. Small room.
You gotta RSVP to attend
How fucking cool. They covered (and nailed) the band’s beloved track “Wild Horses,” from their 1990 album Jordan: The Comeback. Great video on YouTube.
I set the goal of designing a new set up for under 200 and feel pretty good with the results. All finds on Marketplace over the course of a week.
Turntable: Philips GA 212 Electronic (1970s)
Receiver: Panasonic ‘Series 44’ RE-7880 (1980)
Speakers: Polk T15
I’ll need to make a few fixes to the turntable — head shell cap needs to be re-glued, power switch needs to be replaced, and the belt is dunzo. Otherwise, it seems like I’ll be ready to roll in no time!
The LSQ Podcast is hosted by renowned music journalist / SiriusXMU host, Jenny Eliscu. She goes deep with Mike on the songwriter's process, the ins and outs of the band, and so much more.
