Hi all, our baby is 10 months, so this won’t be relevant for years. We’re doing OPOL, Spanish from me and English from mom, in the US. When she’s in middle/high school, I’m going to want to ask her about what she’s learning. That sounds like it would be very tricky for her to explain in Spanish is she’s learning all the content and vocab (for chemistry, for example) in English. Anyone have experience with how OPOL works when kids are learning about things in a language that’s not the one they speak with you?

I know people go both ways on this, but it sounds like more people have trouble speaking. For me, it was totally the opposite. I was able to speak very effectively, with a large vocabulary, nearly perfect grammar, and poor but comprehensible pronunciation in less than a year (with very intensive textbook-like studying). Even with tons of conversations with native speakers, including living in Latin America, it took me years for my listening to get anywhere close. Even today, I’m very fluent but listening still requires a lot of focus and I’ll miss things way more often than I do in English. I’m wondering how unusual this imbalance is, or if I’m a big outlier because I could memorize vocab and learn grammar super fast, but I might have a bit of a phonological processing disorder? Excited to hear y’all’s thoughts - from everyone, but especially from others who have advanced quite far in their Spanish acquisition journey!
