Lake Manatee State Park

Morning everyone,

I know this state park technically is not in Sarasota, but since it’s so close in manatee county I figured I’d ask anyway.

Recently visited lake manatee off of 64. I had been a few times.

Every single time I go there, I get the same unsettling feeling. I can’t quite explain it, but the place feels… off. Like there’s a strange heaviness hanging over it.

Maybe it’s the fact that the “beach” is really just a small swimming area on a lake known for alligators. Swimming there always feels like tempting fate. Or maybe it’s because the place is almost always eerily empty, no matter when I visit.

I’m not trying to insult anyone who enjoys it, but I genuinely can’t shake the feeling that something isn’t right about that place. Does anyone know if there’s some dark history behind it? An accident, tragedy, or something that happened there years ago?

Or am I the only one who gets the creeps every time I visit?

Personal Finances

Hey everyone,

I’m curious how people are making it work financially in Sarasota these days.
Rent seems extremely high, home prices are still elevated, insurance costs keep rising, and it feels like every other vehicle on the road is brand new.

For those who are comfortable sharing:

What’s your approximate household income?

How much do you spend each month?

How much are you able to save or invest monthly?

Wages in the area don’t seem to have kept pace with the cost of living, so I’m genuinely interested in understanding how different families are managing.
I often see households with multiple vehicles, several children, and a stay-at-home parent, and I’m curious whether that’s being supported by high incomes, remote work, savings from previous years, family assistance, business ownership, or something else.

I’d love to hear some real-world examples and perspectives.

From my side, early 30s. Father, wife is a stay at home mom to a toddler. I’m making 9k a month gross, invest 45-50% of gross income/year, with some months higher and others lower. We spend roughly 3k a month but even that is a squeeze for us. Was taught to be frugal.

We don’t own a home and drive a beat up car, no debt.
