Prioritise moving out or financial independence?
24 years old, and currently earning £40k in a field with great upward mobility. I could switch jobs with relative ease for £60k+ however I love my current role (wfh, have made great friends, etc.) so I'm in no rush. Perhaps I'll move on next year.
I'm currently contributing:
- LISA - £320 per month
- Easy access savings: £500 per month
- S&S ISA: £400 per month
- Then there's student loans and pension contributions
Current balances:
- Cash: £2k
- Easy access savings: £3k (was previously £8k, but recently purchased a car + 1 year insurance)
- LISA: £10K
- S&S: £4k
- Crypto: £2k (started with £100 and has grown; I don't actively deposit)
No debts.
I currently live at home, and have paid rent for the year up-front, which was £4k.
My dilemma: Living at home is great financially, but I'm also feeling the need to get some more independence. When my LISA reaches £15k, I was thinking of purchasing a flat in the £150k range, however I am also tempted to hold off on that and stay home knowing I have a deposit ready, and instead focusing on building up my other accounts without worrying about a mortgage and other housing costs.
My goal has always been to reach £100k in accessible money by 30 years old, and moving out could hinder that. We have also come to an agreement that if I find myself unemployed for whatever reason I don't have to pay rent (so if I lost it right now, my year up front would be frozen in time and would start counting down again when I get a new job, if that makes sense).
But in spite of the above, housing is only going to become more and more expensive so I feel like I need to get onto the ladder sooner than later otherwise I'll never own a place.
