Potentially buying an EV that’s 7/8 years old and would like advice.
Returning a lease EV that is too expensive to justify keeping because usage has dropped considerably recently. Wife used it to go to her office but no longer needs to.
Main car is now ICE, serves the family well and is likely to do so for a few years if looked after. 2016 Skoda Octavia.
Realistically the next EV only needs to a 20 mile round trip every day and occasionally run errands, get me to the gym.
Want to retain EV because of economy and distance I’m travelling isn’t that great, but my concern is reliability. Budget is ideally £5k which will get an old Nissan Leaf (not my preference), a Renault Zoe, or something a bit younger if I go for Cat N / S. Similar age Ioniq’s do come up for a little more.
Concern is reliability of batteries because some of these have considerable mileage if you look on Autotrader. Does anyone have experience buying an EV that’s old? Is there anything I look out for? Budget can go higher but this is essentially a buy until it dies vehicle in my head. Have considered petrol but keep coming back to economy of running it? Then I think about servicing an EV. Never had to do this so don’t know costs and can do more to an ICE than I can on an EV.
Just looking for guidance and advice on reasonable EV within budget, things to consider and generally hoping one of you just posts a link to a superb value vehicle that I’d have never otherwise found and end this cycle of looking for cars! Not really. But contributions would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Should I ask for an immediate pay rise or a discretionary one time bonus after becoming better qualified to do my current job?
Since getting my current job I’ve been heavily invested in and am now qualified in the operation of various pieces of heavy equipment (B1 and B3 forklift licenses and J3 license for tele handlers), a national license to instruct people on their operation, and have a level 3 NEBOSH General Health & Safety qualification. I see getting these as a massive perk of my current job as all licenses and qualifications sit with me, not my employer, so I retain them if I leave.
Given the faith shown and investment made in me over around 3 years I want to repay them with a fair amount of loyalty and have no intention of leaving any time soon. That said, I’m objectively far more qualified than I was when I first arrived, so a conversation around a pay rise, or even a discretionary one off bonus, seems reasonable.
How can I broach the subject tactfully? What should I use as evidence that I’m due a pay rise or a bonus (beyond obtaining the licenses and other qualifications)? It doesn’t need to be immediate either I suppose…if it’s something I’m prepared to defer, how can I go about ensuring it’s not something I’m promised but never receive? I’ve never had this sort of conversation before but have had a couple of people in the same org say, unsolicited, that asking for a pay rise is well within my rights. Lordy, I don’t even know what figure to ask for either as a bonus or a pay rise.
“It’s a departure for Sid”
First World Cup Daily’s episode in which Barney discusses Sid Lowe’s Escalade-type car he has rented and he describes it as a car where (paraphrase) “Sid might be shooting at people through the passenger side window”.
Max’s response “It’s a departure for Sid” really tickled me.
Not sure I’ll listen to many of the Daily’s but, if this is the gold-dust each episode promises, I just might.
