MG4 Standard 51 kWh for ~£19k - worth it as a Leaf 40 kWh upgrade?

Curious what UK owners think of the MG4, since I know it sold well over there.

I'm in the Netherlands, currently driving a 2019 Nissan Leaf 40 kWh. It's been fine for daily use, but I'm increasingly fed up with two things: CHAdeMO is dying fast here, the network has been shrinking for years, and the range just isn't keeping up with how I use the car anymore, especially in winter.

Right now you can get a brand new MG4 Standard 51 kWh Final Edition here in the Netherlands for €21.999, which works out to roughly £19.000. That's pretty striking for a new car with CCS. The catch is, that these car are in stock for almost a year.

Efficiency-wise, the MG4 51 kWh comes in at around 17 kWh/100 km in real-world conditions, which is a step back from the Leaf's roughly 14-15 kWh/100 km. But the bigger battery (51 vs ~36 kWh usable) more than makes up for that, and real-world range is around 280-300 km, noticeably more than what I typically get out of the Leaf.

The fast charging situation is also a big jump: the MG4 does up to 87 kW on CCS, whereas the Leaf is stuck at 50 kW CHAdeMO, and finding a working CHAdeMO these days is its own adventure.

Design-wise they're both compact hatchbacks, but that's roughly where the similarity ends. The MG4 is a fair bit more modern inside and out.

For those of you who own or have owned one: any reliability concerns, things that annoyed you, charging curve issues? Biggest thing I've seen mentioned is that the 51 kWh version benefits from regular balance charges to 100%, which is a bit of a quirk.

Give me some options on what I should be looking to pick up asap?

Polestar 2 looks appealing, but what am I missing?

Sanity check

Hi,

Im looking at swapping both mine and my partners vehicles to electric. I have a 50miles round trip commute to work 2/3 days a week and routinely visit family 200miles away. My wife does about 20miles a day. Weve got 1yr twins who are in the bulky rear facing seats and im 6'4" so could do with good rear leg room in both cars. We've got a driveway so can get a charger installed. Im tempted to granny charge to start with to see if we actually need to install a dedicated charger.

Im thinking of getting an enyaq, which seems well recommended on here. As its got a great boot and good rear legroom? Is there anything else i should go look at? Im looking at used a few years old. Is it worth paying the extra for a 85 or is an 80 ok?

My wife currently has a t roc and wants something similar. I've suggested a e-niro as thats similar ish size? My wife really prefers the new shape compared with the old one. Is there anything else apart from the kona which we should look at?

Torn between the ID3 and the Megane etech

Hi all, im looking for a commuter that mainly is comfortable, low road noise, doesn't feel all the bumps, as well as a few other things.

I've narrowed it down to these two. Id3 prefacelift vs renault megane etech iconic, which is the fancier trim. In terms of premium feel megane definitely wins, but with those 20 inch wheels it wasn't the softest, even if it was a definite upgrade from my yaris hybrid.

Have any of y'all driven both the ID3 and the megane etech? Is it noticably better on the ID3 with it's 18 inch wheels? Any direct comparisons would be helpful.

Thanks!

I've driven the new Volvo EX60. AMA

If you're looking for a posh electric SUV, times are good. The BMW iX3 and Mercedes GLC Electric have recently launched, and now the crowd is complete with the Volvo EX60.

I travelled to Spain to test the car at the international launch and found it to be a comfortable way to get around, with loads of space inside. My son's child seat would fit no problem at all, and the long range means road trip stoppages are dictated more by the size of your bladder than the car's battery.

Good for the most part, then, but I'm still yet to find a car that's intuitive to use with all the buttons removed from the dash, and the BMW iX3 looks like better value for money.

Renault Scenic or a chinese car for £60 cheaper a month?

I've narrowed down a shortlist.

I'm leaning towards a Scenic over the EV3 (especially as mine would be the 'air'), Elroq, Enyak , 3008, new leaf.

Someone today mentioned the Ford Explorer again looks nice but think the scenic is more stylish?

But now i'm looking one more time at the leapmotor b10, jaecoo, geely ex5.

Can anyone you think theyre worth considering using the scenic as a benchmark. i'd save 40-50 a month, but that is not a concern to me.

Help a 1st time EV driver out

1st time EV driver. Getting my EV5 delivered next week. My home charger installation plans have been complicated by finding out I have a looped electric supply which may take months to sort out.

Will really appreciate some advice on what do I need to do to be able to just charge the car on a daily/weekly basis. For context , I live in York. Drive 10-15 miles/day in the city for work. Long drives 3-4 times per year to London/scotland.

Going through all the apps and charging networks is overwhelming.

Will really appreciate some practical advice on what actually is needed to keep the car charged!

Many thanks A panicked 1st timer

Cable theft concerns - Tethered vs Untethered

Having already ordered a hypervolt 3, I'm currently having second thoughts if this is the most sensible option. It'd be going on the front of a 3 bed semi, on a bus route, and above the fence line.

Has anyone else made this consideration? I know some car insurance includes charging equipment theft, but really don't want to record a claim if I were to go untethered in the first place.

Ideally, I'd want an untethered the cable could be permenantly locked into and replaced as necessary. Does anyone else have any other recommendations?

Salary Sacrifice EV Choices

Hi,

I'm wanting to get a new EV car on salary sacrifice and narrowed it down to these choices (whats available on Tusker Cars). It will mostly be used for family of 3, driving to school, short commutes to work, driving around lake district on the weekend and occasionally motorway driving.

Its quoted at paying over 3 years doing about 12500 miles. Insurance, maintenance, MOT etc all included.

MGS5 Trophy - £453 a month

Geely EX5 Max - £440 a month

Skoda Elroc 85 Edition - £492 a month

BYD Seal Excellence - £496 a month

I am initially drawn to the Elroc for practical reasons but not sure if I'm getting good value for money here. The BYD does look amazing, price wise I'm thinking I'm getting the better deal out of the lot of them, just not sure.

Any help or advice will be appreciate. Got the Elroc and Seal booked in for test drives.

EQA with roof bars and box?

Just wondering if any EQA owners currently have roof bars and a box and could share recommendations and/or pics? I currently have Cupra Formentor and am waiting for my EQA to be delivered, however it doesn't look like my existing setup would be transferable

Good Choice?

I posted a week or so ago regarding a possible replacement for my Honda Jazz Hybrid. I'm the weirdo who puts her car in the garage! Don't do much travelling, probably longest journey will be about 50 miles at any one time.

My saved searches has brought up this BMW i3 which is one of the motors that was recommended. BMW i3

It seems to be a good price but are there any red flags? Hoping to test drive tomorrow or Friday.

A lot of car or a lot of problems??

Whilst having a look around with the filters I have in Autotrader for a second hand Tesla, this has popped up.
I appreciate the risks that come with buying privately rather than through a dealership….but:

I don’t know much about the model x so anyone with a similar year and model, I’d appreciate some honest reviews. I’ve watched some videos online about potential issues with air suspension and knocking noises from the steering upon acceleration or full lock turning.

For what I’m looking for (family suv) this fits the bill quite nicely, more so with 88k on the clock it seems alright 🤷‍♂️

Cheers.

What EV?

I do a round trip of 125 around 3 days a week in the summer and maybe 4 days a month in the winter. I have 2 young kids so I need space for them and I'll be buying a used EV with a budget of 20-25k.

Ideally I want a car that has a heat pump and a minimum winter range of 160 miles but ideally more.

So far I haven't test drive any but my thoughts have been,

Tesla - not a fan of the CEO, I hear the ride is horrible and not sure I love the giant iPad set up. This is model Y but possibly a model 3.

Nissan Ariya - not seen many of them but the reviews seem good?

Renault scenic e-tech - looks nice, seems to be a very modern EV, but are Renault reliable?

BMW i4 - this is more for me than as a family car. Does anyone have any idea how good it works as a family car?

I like the Kia EV6 and the Ioniq 5 but I've discounted them due to the ICCU issues and how easy that are to steal. I know the warranty has been extended but I can't be without a car while they get around to fixing it.

The enyaq, id4, q4 seem good but I would need to find one with a heat pump as it doesn't seem they were standard fit.

The polestar 2 is an option but someone I know has had so many issues with theirs, are they reliable?

I'll probably be purchasing by the end of the month. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there anything I'm missing.

Looking at a used Citroen ë-C4 for around £10k. Am I missing something?

Hi,

I’m currently in the market for a new car with a budget around the £10k mark, and I’ve noticed a fair few used Citroen ë-C4s around at this price. On paper, it looks like a good car, but I’ve not seen many about or many recommendations on Reddit even though online reviews are good. Is there a massive catch I’m missing?

Our use case is pretty straightforward. My commute is just a 20-mile round trip a couple of days a week. We do occasional longer journeys every couple of months, but we have a young baby, so stopping every couple of hours to charge at the charging speeds reported don’t seem an issue.

I know the Kia e-Niro is the "sensible" answer with better range, but the look and the comfort of the Citroen honestly appeals to us more.

Would love to hear from any actual owners on experience. Oh and also if a buggy would fit in the boot okay would be good to know too. Cheers!

Spacious EVs

Trying to gauge EV car size comparisons. If you were driving and looking to have a comfortable journey with 2 adults, 3 teenagers and a couple large suitcases and a few medium suitcases what size EV would you look to use for such a trip? BMW ix3? Audi Q6? VW ID.7Tourer? Skoda Enyaq? Maybe these aren’t big enough, perhaps something with more boot space or rear space? It would also be used for day to day commute. Maybe even larger EV?

Quietest EVs (low road noise)?

Looking for a company car to do a commute on the M25

What are some quiet EVs that won’t break the bank? Preferably under £50k

I don’t mind whether saloon or SUV style (but I presume SUV gets more wind resistance and therefore more wind noise)

Any route planner for charging along the way?

I'm new to electric cars, and I want to plan a route that includes charging, is there any app or software that helps with this?

I see the Google Maps is great at telling you the closest charging point, but that's not what I want to know, I want to know the furthest charging point along my route that is still within my range.

Even better if it can take into account the charging times at each point and calculate the best combination possible.

EDIT: Many thanks to all the people who contributed ideas. I had a look at all the possibilities, and it seems that abetterrouteplanner.com does exactly what I need.

I'll be renting a car so I'm not sure exactly what satnav it will have, but I totally agree with posters who said that the car manufacturers and app publishers should make sure that the two can talk to each other so that the car updates the app on its charge level.

Options

Hey all,

Looking at swapping out my 22 golf for an EV finally, I keep having to keep up the servicing and I swap cars continuously and lose a lot of cash 😅

Doing about 20000 miles a year currently all on a weekend (250 Fri, 250 sun)

I've been looking at leasing on a two year deal, no real home charging for now but due to change eventually.

Found some really decent deals too.

So far I've found these and they interest me alot

Tesla model 3 standard rwd- like the space and the cheap charging, not big on the Tesla brand and it's just a bit boring- 2k down about £323pm

Hyundai Ioniq 6 ultimate- 2.5k down, £380pm, much prefer this to be honest and the charging is quick, but I'm aware space is a little smaller

Ideally wanna go under £400pm, 3-6 month deposit.

Anyone have suggestions?, not looking at used as the technology is advancing very quick.

EV recommendations approx 20k

I’m looking for recommendations for my first EV. Some background:

I’m probably looking at PCP and will likely pay the balloon payment to keep it after if reasonable. I’d like payments to be 400-450 monthly with a £1000 down payment, which I think puts the budget at around 20-22k? (36 months)

One important detail is that I don’t have a home charger but will do in approx 9 months. My daily gym is 5 minutes away and has 150kw chargers so would likely be using those in the meantime.

I’d be doing around 12k miles per year, and I’d definitely value comfort/reliability over acceleration etc. also not a big fan of hatchback cars aesthetically

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
