Alpine A290 - Left at 93%

I just swapped over from a Cupra Born to an Alpine A290.

Yesterday I charged the car, thinking I set the limit to 80%, but realised too late that it went passed that. I stopped it at 93%

I drove it for a bit last night with maximum AC, to bring it down a bit, but I’m still at 88%. I’m planning a long trip tomorrow, but can’t do another drive to bring the charge down further before that.

I usually only charge above 80% if I will be driving long distance straight away, so I’m a bit worried about leaving it on higher charge for a few days.

As a one-off, am being needlessly overcautious?

ETA:
Many thanks for all the replies. I accept that I have been overcautious to the point of neurosis. Before getting the Born, all my cars have been mechanical, and I fully understand how they work, and how to fix them if something goes wrong. EVs are still like black magic to me.

First Trip

My car arrived about a month ago, a few days before my family and I went on holiday for three weeks.

Today I took my lads out for a drive, we went to Duxford to check out some planes - we managed to complete the first endurance challenge. I like the Need For Speed vibes!

NKD x 2

My Manager got confiscated a few weeks ago because I forgot I had it on me when I went to a government building.

I’ve been visiting family in Indonesia over the past few weeks, and asked a friend of mine to look for an Alox Rambler from his friends in China.

He got me two, and so far has refused payment. I’m buying him beers tomorrow - it’s only fair.

Bad Week

I’ve been silly twice now in the last week or so.

A few days ago forgot I had my Victorinox Manager attached to my keys, so had it taken off me when I went to a government building. Apparently it will be posted back to me, but I’m not holding my breath.

I caught a flight today. I checked in my Victorinox Explorer and Spyderco Stretch 2, but I forgot that I had my mini-toolkit in my son’s nappy bag. My Victorinox Pioneer and Knipex XS Cobra got confiscated. The security were actually pretty cool about it - they initially walked me over to the gate to try and hand it to cabin crew, so they can keep hold of it until I reached my destination, but the ground crew at the gate wasn’t having it.

I would rather have given the SAK and pliers to the helpful security staff rather than chucking them in the bin, but they said they weren’t allowed to do that, so into the bin went the knife and pliers.

At least they let me keep my 711L ratchet and 11-in-1 bits.

Body suit subject matter

Traditionally, is there a link between subject matter on different part of a body suit?

When I see older horimono photos, especially gobusode munewari, they often have the back piece as the main subject, with either background or background with flowers/leaves. I don’t think I have seen many older bodysuits with multiple subjects.

I’m currently working on Fujin/Raijin half-sleeves with pine and plum blossom on the hikae, but down the line would love to have a Kaosho Rochishin backpiece, but I’m not sure if there is a rule about “matching” subject matter in the way that there are rules around matching the subject with the seasons.

NKD: Arthur Wright Lambsfoot Senator

Just arrived with the mail. I ordered it a couple of months ago or so, and forgot about it until a few days ago.

It was a bit gritty to begin with, so I gave it a clean. It’s a smooth 6/10 pull after the clean, solid walk and talk, and to my eyes looks pretty well centred. I’ll probably force a patina this weekend.

Happy customer.

Colour test

I have two half sleeves in the making - Raijin on the right arm, and Fujin on the left.

I have dark brown skin, and am going to ask my artist to do a colour test before we start colouring. I am thinking of using mostly black and grey with red, green, and blue make the main subjects pop.

Are there any small traditional images that use varying shades of red, green, and blue that I could use instead of dots and lines that will be blasted over? Or am I overthinking it, and dots and lines would be fine and easy to cover?

First strop, compound questions

I have never owned a strop before.

I bought a Sharpal 205H and 6 micron Stroppy Stuff.

Should the compound be applied on the suede side or the smooth side? What would the difference be.

For what it’s worth, I’ll be sharpening Magnacut and K390 with a Worksharp Precision Adjust (normal one, not Elite). I might get a Sharpal 162N 325/1200 grit diamond stone as well, but will practice with cheaper knives first.

Thanks in advance!

K390 and Magnacut maintenance

I have a Worksharp Precision Adjust (standard, not pro).

Would the stock stones be sufficient to maintain my Spyderco K390 Stretch 2 and Magnacut UKPK?

If not, I was thinking of getting the Kohleebree3d 3D-printed universal stone holder - which stones come highly recommended for the above use? I will also be using it to sharpen cheap stainless kitchen knives and some carbon steel slipjoints.

NCD: Lynch on Stretch 2 K390

New Lynch clip in Dark Abyss.

The installation was a minor faff, but ultimately only took about 15 minutes.

I love this setup - I would EDC it if it were legal, but alas, I will have to limit its use as my camping knife.

When it’s time to sharpen it, I might use a Worksharp to regrind it to 17 DPS, although I’m not sure if that’s too acute for a field knife.

Are there any detriments to Spydie Flick?

As it says in the title.

I’ve been trying to Spydie flick my Stretch 2 with varying degrees of success. Will flicking the knife open cause undue stress to the locking mechanism?

I have better luck reverse opening the knife if accompanied with a wrist flick, which would cause even more stress.

Am I just overthinking this?

NKD: Stretch 2 K390

I was umm-ing and aah-ing about which knife to get next. I knew that I wanted a K390 blade, but wasn’t sure what model.

I considered the Dragonfly to meet the hypothetical need of travelling to a place which allows locking blades of up to 2.5 inches. I discounted the Delica because I like finger choils.

Any locking blade will not be carried regularly, as I live in the UK and have a Magnacut UKPK that is both legal to carry and has sentimental value.

I was looking at an online knife store yesterday afternoon, and stumbled on the Stretch 2. The model wasn’t on my radar, but I bought it on impulse.

I came home from work this evening to a package containing the Stretch 2. I like it, so far. Nice heft, although the blade length is a bit larger than what I am used to. I think it could work well as a camping knife to replace my Mora Classic Number 1, which has served me well over the past few years. I’ll be going camping in a few weeks, so I’ll try it out properly then.

As impulse buys go, I’m rather pleased with it, especially as the website shows that they are now out of stock again.

Factory option is modification?

I have a salary sacrifice Alpine A290GTS+ coming from Tusker.

I contacted the dealership to ask if I can have a dashcam installed. For reference, a dashcam is a factory option. They confirmed that they would be happy to install it, and that the added coat would be relatively cheap when spread over the lease period.

Tusker came back and said that a hardwired dashcam counts as a modification, so will not be permitted. Is it normal for lease companies to view factory options as modifications?

UKPK legality

I am UK-based, and can happily carry a Spyderco UKPK legally. I’m curious as to where a UKPK would NOT be legal. For reference, the UKPK has a non-locking blade of 7.4cm/2.9” and can be opened with one hand.

Chicago and Denmark come to mind. Anywhere else?

I wanted a SAK with an in-line Phillips screwdriver, so I bought an Explorer, but I really don’t like how thick it is. I carried a Pioneer for a very long time, but recently started carrying a Compact, supplemented by a Rambler/Manager attached to my keys.

Other than the micro screwdriver, I haven’t really used the Compact since getting it.

I’m thinking of performing transplant surgery on the Explorer and Compact, but need to decide on whether to build a Yeoman or a Scientist.

I know that I like two layers, and hate four layers, but don’t know how I would like three layers.

Given that I will have a Rambler/Manager with adequate scissors, how much added value do large scissors have?

With the decision made to replace my Cupra Born with an A290 GTS+, I now have some other questions.

I have been using ABRP to plan my trips on the Born, and have provided the live data from the car to ABRP via the Tronity app, which doesn’t include Alpine or Renault on it’s list of vehicles it can get live data from.

Is there a way to provide live data from the A290 to ABRP without using an OBD dongle?

The time has come for me to replace my salary sacrifice 73-reg Cupra Born V1.

I went full EV at the time to take advantage of the congestion charge exemption, which sadly is no longer. I have been using street charging at between 29p/kWh and 59p/kWh depending on the time, and as much as possible, Ionity at 43p/kWh when driving longer distances.

Without the congestion charge exemption, I no longer have any incentive to stay with EV, but full ICE is not an option from my salary sacrifice provider.

I’m currently torn between staying EV, but downsizing to a Renault 5 or Alpine A290, or to move up in size to a Cupra Leon Estate PHEV. Street charging means that I won’t be saving much by staying EV.

I will be using the car in and around London, with fairly regular trips to Somerset, South Wales, and Kent, either by myself, or with my partner, a toddler, and a teenager. For perspective, we travelled comfortably on a two week road-trip with all our camping gear in the Born.

Any advice is welcome.
