Installation all completed - very happy with the results

Installation completed this afternoon and I'm very happy with the results.

  • 11 × 510W AIKO panels—eight on the main roof and three on the garage
  • FoxESS H1 5kW hybrid inverter
  • FoxESS EP12 battery (11.5kwh)
  • myenergi zappi GLO EV charger
  • PV-Ultra cable from the main roof
  • Approximately 50 metres of 25mm² armoured cable

For those interested the scaffold was circa £900 (arranged by the installer). We had some national installers tell us that they would be happy to put the equipment under the kitchen window at the back of the house despite PAS63100:2024 https://pages.bsigroup.com/PAS63100:2024

Installer was the only one suggesting a cable tray down the side of the garden to the garage where the inverter and battery is placed (and technically the only place we could put the equipment).

£10-12k to spend on an EV - what would you choose ?

I've just had solar, battery and an EV charger installed at home. I have around £10-12k to spend on an EV. Current car is a Ford B-Max which is towards the end of its life.

I work 2 days a week in the office that has free chargers (need to pre-book which may be an issue as they are very popular). Office is 43 miles each way. I currently do around 8k miles a year.

What would you suggest getting ?

Thanks in advance

EDIT - Thanks for all your responses. I forgot to mention That I wanted range over 200 miles which rules out some of the options but thats all the same !

3 storey install - day 1 completed

Busy day at the house yesterday. Beginning to wish I'd taken the day off from working at home but we got there in the end.

Installers wanted to come straight down the back of the house from the loft (left as you look at the scaffolding) despite the fact they agreed to come down the right, partly so we could hide the chunky cable along the guttering. We kept it down the right side.

Panels are on the roof and garage roof, I need to speak to them about a gutter bracket that's been snapped off the garage.

They may need to tinker with the scaffold on the left as it's too close to where the cable tray is to head down to the garage.

Generally all good, a great install team and we might be done today if we're lucky!!

Solar installed next week, thoughts on SEG...

I have solar being installed next week,

11 x Neostar 510w panels

FoxESS H1 5KW inverter

FoxESS EP12 11.52kWh battery

Despite working for one of the largest B2B power and gas suppliers I'm still trying to get my head around everything to get the best out of the system.

I have Octopus as my import power and gas supplier on a fixed deal that runs out in January 2027. Given the theme it seems of offering the best SEG deals for customers that have their import with them, would you say the best and easiest thing to do would be to setup the SEG on Octopus Outgoing and then once it comes to sorting out the import tariff at the end of the year try and bundle everything up together then to try and get the best deal ?

Thanks in advance

Splitting in garage roof frame prior to Solar installation

Hi all,

In a coupe of weeks I'm due to have solar installed at our house, 8 panels on the house roof and 3 panels on the garage roof.

Whilst in the garage today I've noticed a split in the wood close to the apex of the garage. It's not the side the 3 panels are being installed on but it's prompted me to post this. Any thoughts on next steps ? I've been in the house for 18 years from new.

Thanks in advance

View looking straight up

Do I need to prebook the Haruka train for this sunday afternoon ?

My daughter and I fly into KIX on Sunday at 1pm. Would you think I need to pre-book seats on the Haruka to Kyoto or do you think it will be quiet enough not to worry about doing it in advance ?

It's our first first time in Japan and we need to out of the airport but also sort out IC cards, collect Pocket Wifi and whilst I don't want to get into a panic if the time is tight I equally don't want to be sitting around for a long time !!

Thanks in advance

Likelihood of DNO capping generation ? (DNO - National Grid West Midlands)

So I'm inching towards going ahead with Solar with the following setup;

11x510w panels

5kw inverter

11.5kwh battery

I live in Stafford close to the town centre. Would you think there would be an likelihood of DNO capping how much I could export ? I've only seen one set of panels on the whole estate, but know of a friend in Berkshire (outside Caversham) where their DNO has imposed an export limit. Do any of you with existing Solar have export limits ? Thanks in advance

EDIT I forgot to mention that we live fairly close to a GE Vernova plant that makes transformers and uses a shed load of electric (although through HV/EHV lines).

Well after getting all manner of quotes through we had a local company come out to review the logistics of what was required. I originally wanted equipment in the garage 10 meters away from the 3 storey house but after going through the motions of different setups, and discovered that some installers really didn't seem to fess about installing batteries less than a meter from doors and windows.

I even considered taking a fence panel away nearest the house to put in a brick wall to use as a home for the equipment but the quotes for that were crazy so I went back to the garage installation for the equipment. New quote for 8 panels on the house roof and 3 on the garage roof is

11 x 510w Aiko Neostar panels

1 x 5kw inverter

1 x 11.52kwh Fox ESS EP12 battery

Coming out at £10,489 and they expect it to be pay for itself after 8 years. I've asked if the installation went ahead to be ready for an EV Charger on the garage wall, the team said they would need to upgrade the cabling given the distances involved, but have suggested utilising a 50mm cable tray to place the cables on down the side of the garden which would work well. Other companies have said they would only do it in the patios was dug up (which I don't want) or they put in a catenary for for cabling (again not fond of that).

Installing a Zappi Glo EV charger would be an extra £800 (VAT free).

Appreciate that many people are going to say its a bonkers price, but it would seem that this isn't a your run of the mill installation.

Just pondering now if I should pull the trigger ?!?!?
