Oribe ware pottery sold at Tachikawa Tenbosu.

Correction: it was Tenpos Tachikawa.

I bought it a while ago, so I’m not sure if they still have it, but Tachikawa Tenbosu, a secondhand tableware shop in Tachikawa, had small Oribe ware bowls for 1,000 yen.

I use one at home, and it’s pretty nice.

The second photo is a 100-yen anpan, the kind commonly sold at supermarkets.

Do libraries where you live still use microfilm or microfiche?

I live in Japan, and Fujifilm has finally ended its microfiche-related business entirely, including the photographic materials and chemicals. Orders that had already been placed are apparently still being processed.

This means that domestic production of microfilm and microfiche in Japan has now completely come to an end.

I used to work at a university library, so I had relatively many chances to deal with microfiche. I am curious whether universities elsewhere are still using it.

To be honest, I still have bad memories of that vinegar smell from deteriorated acetate film, and those absurdly huge automated storage systems that broke down all the time. I admit they looked impressive, though.

If your library still uses microfilm or microfiche, what kinds of materials are they mainly used for? I assume newspapers, especially local papers and foreign newspapers, are probably common.

And if your library has stopped using them, I would be interested to hear how that process ended.

This may not be the most appropriate topic here, but I found the actual instructions for the octopus sausages Araya probably wanted someone to make for her, so I wanted to share them. Instead, Ryoshu made T4 phages...

These instructions are printed on the package of Prima Ham Red Wieners. In Japan, this is probably the sausage most people would buy if they wanted to make octopus sausages for a lunchbox, since they are dyed red and stay relatively non-greasy even after cooling. That said, many people also just use ordinary sausages or bulk packs of commercial red wieners.

To me, every rear rack on a bicycle had always been the kind with little hooks for bungee cords.

But as in the photo, it seems many newer ones do not have those hooks.

Yes, it is my own fault for messing up, but it is a bit frustrating when something without any hooks for tying down luggage is sold under the name “Commuter.” In my area, almost all city-bike rear racks have hooks for bungee cords.

May a small misfortune befall the parts selector every single day. 📿

I think the location was around Shimo-Ochiai, Japan on the west side of Shinjuku,though it may have been a little farther west.
It was near Arai-yakushi-mae Station.
That seems very likely.

I think the season was early winter.

He passed away in 2020.

In Japan, his name was quite naturalist well known for a time, and he often appeared in conversations and interviews with people such as Hayao Miyazaki.

He may be one of those people who is better known abroad than in his country of origin, but how well is his name still remembered in Britain — or, more specifically, in Wales?

From here, I have no real sense of how well known he is in Britain.
For example, is it almost unknown there that he had connections with prominent animators such as Hayao Miyazaki?

I would be very grateful if you could spare a little of your time in Britain to tell me about this.

I know almost nothing about Hangul. I have only had a little exposure to the mixed Hanja-Hangul writing style used around the 1950s to 1970s.

Some time ago, I saw a post somewhere that rewrote the Speaker of the National Assembly’s speech to former President Yoon in a mixed Hanja-Hangul style.

I cannot remember the full text, but if mixed Hanja-Hangul writing still existed today, would this sentence sound natural?

I am not planning to do this immediately, but I am curious about something for a possible future trip to Germany.

If I send a letter or postcard from a post office in a city I visit, can I have it postmarked with the name of that city?

I would mainly use local postcards, but would it also be acceptable to use postcards that I bring with me? They would be within the standard size and weight limits, but they might have unusual designs, such as anime illustrations or logos.

I am considering two cases:

  1. Sending postcards by international mail.
  2. Sending postcards to myself from the same city, or from a nearby town, to the hotel where I am staying.

The cities I have in mind are:

  • Iserlohn
  • Remscheid
  • Landsberg
  • Eisenach
  • Altena

My concern is not simply whether I can mail postcards from these cities without problems. What I would like is for the postmark itself to include the name of the city.

For example, I would like to know what would actually happen in cases such as these:

  • The postmark might be from a nearby sorting center instead.
  • There might not be a post office there at all.
  • There might be a post office, but the postmark might only say something like “North Rhine-Westphalia collection area No. X,” so it would not serve my purpose.

I would be very grateful if someone could tell me how this is actually handled in practice.

Personally, my favorite episode is Brother’s Keeper from Season 11 episode21.
I also really like the translated Japanese title.

『兄そして弟や友』The Brother, the Younger Brother, and the Friend

Of course, it is true that it departs from the standard Law & Order format. So I would not necessarily call it a great episode for a first-time viewer.

But after watching Law & Order for a while, if someone asked me what the best episode was, Brother’s Keeper would be my answer.

Lennie Briscoe’s sharp, dry wit.
Ed Green’s passionate attitude.
The casual shots of New York scenery. The pizza looked good, too.

I also thought the guest performances were excellent.

Some parts of the plot are a little far-fetched, but as a story, it is very cleanly put together.

Since I watched it with Japanese subtitles, it is possible that the dialogue felt more compressed and better-paced than it would have in English.
(In Japan, most seasons other than Season 1, Seasons 10–20, and Season 21 are not normally available, so I’m speaking from that premise.)
