How does the government know?

If a GRC lets someone change my passport, birth certificate, and get a new NHS record... how does the government still "know" about their history?

I realise it's knowable, that's not the question. The question is where does the large bureaucratic beast which is the government keep that information? Where is it stored? Can one make a request for that information? For one's own? For someone else's?

What's it like living near the Hythe End Landfill?

It's located at TW19 5AW, and from what I can discern from afar is mainly used to dispose of concrete, bricks, building materials, and soil.

We're looking to rent in the area, and there's a lovely property just a few houses away from this landfill which meets our needs nicely. Unfortunately, though, we can't visit in person to evaluate it, and we're worried about what happens when the wind shifts or work is underway.

Is there any dust? Any smells? Any noise? Or is it hidden away and generally kind to the neighbourhood?

Thank you from a future neighbour!

Moving to UK - trans-inclusive services?

Hi all,

I'm in the uncomfortable position of immigrating to TERF island, but that does mean I'm starting fresh building a life there in the Surrey area, SW of London.

I'll need to establish things like bank accounts, buying cars, possibly a house, etc. And I'd like to exclusively support trans-positive organisations and individuals when the option exists to do so.

Has anyone had a _good_ experience with their bank/cell phone/shopping chain/etc which they can share? Maybe they accepted an unenrolled deed poll and updated your documentation without hesitation? Maybe you work there and have felt nothing but support? An explicitly trans-inclusive gym or trans personal trainer? Is there any network of trans service providers?

I want to put my money and privilege where my beliefs are, but as a stealth trans person I'm having a hard time navigating that.

Hedging Berkshire

I decided a while back that I have zero chance of outperforming Warren(/Abel) as a retail investor, and I like their positions on…. well, everything. So I went all-in.

No regrets, 80% of my portfolio is BRK. But I can’t quite justify 100%.

Any suggestions on an uncorrelated sector/category with good long-term prospects which BRK avoids? Ideally a case which covers the BRK bear case?

My top contenders right now are global small cap and emerging markets.

Guidance goes into effect on London Pride

I know the London Pride committee is a little weak, but is there any chance it could be a perfect venue to make a statement which can’t be ignored by the mainstream press?

Hello all,

I'm looking for options to generate continuous power of 40-50kw at 48v for a marine use case.

The voltage limit is for regulatory/compliance reasons and inflexible. There are no special marine-related considerations, it will be in an enclosed and dry mechanical room. Would be at around, or geared to, ~800-1400RPM. Efficiency and reliability is a priority. Would like to come in under ~75k$/ea (USD). Will need 5 total, no time constraints.

My best bet at this point seems to be a stack of axial flux motors sharing a shaft with a combined motor controller. I don't love that, but I've found one or two manufacturers who claim to support the scenario (and would welcome any suggestions!)

What I've found so far:

  • Molabo i50 drive - high-RPM is sub-optimal and it's really just a high-voltage drive with a built-in inverter.
  • A pair of silixcon drives with a combined controller.

Any thoughts? Anyone seen anything? Anyone know of a company I can ask? Am I going to need to cobble this together in a cave from a box of scraps?

Like the subject says - Warren has trusted him with the company, we're trusting him with our investments. Let's do our small part to support the passing of the torch and share our confidence in our new CEO.

*edit*: well, maybe not _all_ the imagery. It's hard to beat the portrait in the sidebar.
