AITA for being upset that my friend used me to gamble?
For the longest time, I thought people exaggerated how negatively gambling could affect someone’s life. In my mind, it didn’t seem as harmful as things like alcohol or weed, so I never really understood why it could become such a serious problem. Recently, I’ve started to see it differently.
I’ve been best friends with this guy for over 10 years, and one of the things we enjoy doing together is watching UFC. We both occasionally use sports betting apps. Usually, I’ll make one $10 parlay and leave it at that. My friend, however, will sometimes deposit hundreds of dollars and make multiple bets, even though neither of us is really in a financial position where losing that much money would be ideal.
I’ve mentioned to him before that I’m concerned about how much he sometimes spends on sports betting. At the end of the day, though, I know it’s his money and his decision.
This past weekend, he asked if he could send me a FanDuel referral link so I could create an account and he could receive bonus bets. I agreed because I figured the promotion didn’t require him to spend his own money.
He also asked me to place a wager for him, which I thought was a little strange. I later found out that the promotion involved new users placing a wager on something that was extremely likely to happen during the event.
He asked me to put $50 on the offer, and he sent me $55 afterward. I didn’t really understand what the purpose was, but I didn’t think much of it at the time.
After the event, he kept telling me that “his bet” had won and asking me when I was going to send him the $100 that the wager had paid out.
That’s when I realized he was essentially using my new account to complete the promotion and receive the resulting bonus money.
The following day, he repeatedly asked me to send him the $100. I explained that I didn’t have the FanDuel money available in my bank account, but he became frustrated and accused me of not being honest with him.
Eventually, I sent him $100 of my own money just to resolve the situation.
Looking back, I regret doing that. What bothers me most is that I tried to explain why the situation made me uncomfortable and why I felt like I had been put in an awkward position, but he hasn’t really responded and left me on read.
I’m not upset that he likes sports betting or that he spends his own money on it. What bothers me is that I feel like I was brought into his betting activity without fully understanding what was happening, and then felt pressured to give him the money afterward.
We’ve been friends for more than 10 years, so I don’t want this to become a huge issue between us. But I’m genuinely wondering if I’m being unreasonable for feeling this way.
AITA?
