Looking for some opinions from the vintage audio community.
I recently inherited my grandfather's Marantz separates:
Model 150 Tuner
Model 3600 Preamplifier
Model 510M Power Amplifier
They've been sitting unused for at least 20 years, but I'm in the process of having them restored. Aside from their sentimental value, I'm excited to hear what they're capable of once they’ve been serviced.
On the analog side, I recently picked up an immaculate Michell GyroDec from the original owner. It's one of those pieces I've wanted for a long time, and I'm looking forward to pairing it with the restored Marantz system. My speakers are Tekton Electrons.
The reason I'm posting is that I recently visited a respected local audio repair shop to discuss servicing the Marantz gear. During our conversation, the technician suggested that the GyroDec deserved more modern electronics and seemed skeptical that the Marantz separates would be a good long-term match.
That got me thinking.
For those of you with experience listening to both restored vintage separates and modern high-end equipment, would you restore and enjoy the Marantz system, or would you move toward something newer to get the most out of the GyroDec?
I'm genuinely interested in hearing real-world experiences from people who've lived with this kind of equipment. Thank you!
