How different is Year 12 Chemistry compared to Year 11 Chemistry?

Im thinking of dropping chemistry and was just wondering if it is significantly harder or what

Legal Studies OR Chemistry

I’m a Year 11 student trying to choose between keeping Chemistry or dropping it for Legal Studies + Certificate IV in Justice Studies. I have to decide tomorrow.

Right now my subjects are:

  • English
  • General Maths
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Modern History
  • Legal Studies

If I drop Chemistry, I would replace it with Certificate IV (which means a study line where I work independently, often in the library).

My situation:

  • I got A (21/25) in Legal Studies even with an incomplete draft, and my teacher encouraged me to stay in it.
  • Chemistry is wayyy harder for me, especially exams (I do better in assignments).
  • somewhat enjoy Legal Studies and feel more confident in it.
  • I feel like Chemistry gives me “academic validation” and puts me in the same group as high-achieving students.
  • I’m unsure about my future career, but I’m considering:
    • law
    • business,
    • international relations,
    • urban planning,
    • and possibly medical fields (medicine, radiography, sonography, etc).

The dilemma:

  • Chemistry keeps more science/medical pathways open but is stressful and difficult for me.
  • Legal + Cert IV aligns better with my strengths (writing, research, humanities) and may help my ATAR more realistically.
  • I’m worried about closing doors if I drop Chemistry, but I also feel like I would perform better and be less stressed without it.

The decision:

I have to choose tomorrow between:

  • Keeping Chemistry (harder, more “prestigious”, more science pathways open)
  • Dropping Chemistry for Legal Studies + Cert IV (stronger fit for me, potentially better results, but less science flexibility and a study line in the library)

If anyone has advice from experience (especially QLD ATAR students), I’d really appreciate it.
