Bangkok in December: trusted shops for ready-made gem jewelry and lab-grown stones?

Hi! I'll be in Bangkok for a week in December and want ready-made jewelry only, no custom work: gem-set rings, pendants, bead strands and bracelets.

I'm looking at natural yellow sapphire, ruby, pearl, red coral, or citrine, garnet, carnelian and rainbow moonstone, plus lab-created yellow sapphire and ruby.

I'm planning to browse JTC, Gem Tower/Mahesak Road, Charoen Krung, MBK and Chatuchak Weekend Market.

Which shops or floors do you trust, and which would you avoid? For Chatuchak, which sections are best for gems and jewelry?

What are realistic prices for good natural vs lab-created yellow sapphire and ruby, and is quick resizing doable?

Quality and value matter most, and I'd like to carry pieces home. Recent experiences especially welcome. Thanks!

First Thailand trip in December: 2 weeks in Phuket + 1 week in Bangkok — Need itinerary and local recommendations!

First Thailand trip in December: 14 days in Phuket + 7 days in Bangkok — Need recommendations!
Hi everyone! My wife and I are visiting Thailand for the first time from 4–25 December 2026. Our flights are booked, and we’re planning 14 days in Phuket and 7 days in Bangkok.
We’re looking for advice on how to plan our days, where to stay, beaches, sightseeing, nightlife, shopping and skincare clinics. We want a mix of relaxing, exploring and enjoying evenings without spending too much time travelling.
Our hotel budget is ideally under €80 per night for two people, preferably a clean, well-located hotel with a private bathroom and a pool if possible.
1. Phuket: 14 days — Where to stay and how to split our time?
We’re considering staying in two areas, possibly Kamala + Patong, but we’re also interested in Kata and Karon.
Kamala (first base): We’d like to start somewhere relaxed, with a nice beach, greenery, sunset spots, cafés and beach clubs. Which part is best for staying near the beach, restaurants and evening activities? Is it a convenient base for exploring Phuket?
Patong (second base): We’d like to experience Bangla Road, nightlife, beach clubs, pool parties, rooftop bars and shopping. Which area is best to stay in for walking access to these places without being right in the noisiest part? Any good hotels under €80 with a pool?
Kata/Karon: We’re considering these for their beaches and swimming. Would you recommend staying here instead of Kamala or Patong, or visiting on day trips?
We’re particularly interested in:
Beaches with clear water, soft sand, gradual entry and good swimming conditions.
Areas with convenient beach access, restaurants, shops and evening walking streets.
Any beaches or swimming areas with drainage or water-quality concerns to avoid.
The best hotel locations for a couple who want to walk to several attractions rather than rely on taxis.
2. Phuket: Sightseeing, cafés, sunsets and activities
We want to explore Phuket without spending every day travelling long distances. Places and experiences we’re considering include:
Similan Islands: Our only major boat trip from Phuket. Is a day trip worth it, and which tour operators would you recommend?
Promthep Cape and Rawai: Worth visiting from our base, and what else should we combine with them?
Kata and Kata Noi: Best beaches, cafés, sunset spots and places to eat.
Kamala: Sunset locations, beach clubs and cafés.
Patong: Bangla Road, nightlife, rooftop bars and beach clubs.
Naka Weekend Market and Kata Night Market: Which are worth visiting, and what days are best?
Bang Tao and Surin: Are the beach clubs and sunset venues worth the journey?
We’d love recommendations for romantic cafés, viewpoints, sunset restaurants, hidden gems and places that are genuinely worth visiting rather than just popular on social media. Which attractions would you skip?
3. Phuket: Beach clubs, nightlife and markets
We’d like to enjoy different types of evenings, from relaxed sunset drinks to lively nightlife.
Which beach clubs, day clubs, pool parties and rooftop bars would you recommend in Kamala, Patong, Kata, Karon and Bang Tao? We’ve come across Café del Mar and Kudo Beach Club, but would love to hear about other venues and whether they’re worth the price.
Also, which areas have the best combination of night markets, restaurants, bars and walking streets? We’d prefer places where we can spend an evening exploring on foot.
4. Bangkok: 7 days, including my birthday
We’ll spend approximately 18–25 December in Bangkok, and my birthday is on 19 December. We’d love to plan a special dinner or celebration that day, ideally at a romantic rooftop restaurant or somewhere with a great view and atmosphere.
We’re interested in:
Chatuchak Weekend Market
Shopping malls and shopping streets
Rooftop bars and restaurants
Night markets and nightlife
Christmas decorations and festive places
Cafés, restaurants and local food
Which area would you recommend staying in for easy access to BTS/MRT, shopping, restaurants and nightlife? We’re considering Sukhumvit, Siam and Silom, but are open to suggestions. Is seven nights a good amount of time for Bangkok?
Any birthday dinner recommendations that aren’t outrageously expensive would be appreciated, too.
5. Bangkok: Skincare clinics and dermatologists
We’d also like to visit a reputable skincare clinic or dermatologist in Bangkok for a professional consultation about pigmentation, dark spots, uneven skin tone and general skin health.
Which dermatology clinics would you recommend based on personal experience?
Are English-speaking dermatologists available?
What are typical consultation prices?
Are there clinics that specialize in pigmentation?
Are there treatments suitable for someone staying only a few days?
Any clinics or treatments you’d advise avoiding?
We’re looking for a qualified doctor who can assess the skin and explain treatment options, rather than booking a cosmetic procedure based only on social media recommendations.
6. Thailand: What skincare, beauty and other products are worth buying?
We’d love to discover Thai brands and products that aren’t widely available in Europe, especially:
Thai skincare, sunscreens, moisturizers and serums
Sheet masks, makeup and beauty tools
Haircare and bodycare
Pharmacy products
Snacks, food products and souvenirs
Everyday items that are cheaper in Thailand than Europe
Which local brands and specific products are worth buying? Are Watsons, Boots, EVEANDBOY or Beautrium best for selection and prices? Where would you shop for authentic products and good deals?
We’re particularly interested in recommendations based on actual use, rather than just what’s trending.
7. Hotels and transport
With our budget of under €80 per night, we’d appreciate recommendations for clean, comfortable hotels in Kamala, Patong and Bangkok. A pool is a bonus, and we’d prefer to avoid changing hotels too frequently.
For transport:
Are Grab and taxis easy to use in Phuket, and how expensive are journeys between Kamala, Patong, Kata, Karon and Rawai?
Would renting a car be worthwhile, or are taxis and local transfers more practical?
How do you recommend getting around Bangkok?
Which areas are most convenient for public transport?
Are there any common tourist transport mistakes or locations where staying slightly outside the centre makes getting around difficult?
Realistic journey times and costs would be especially helpful.
8. Our travel style and final questions
We’re a couple in our 30s and want a relaxed but enjoyable holiday. We love beautiful beaches, swimming, sunsets, romantic cafés, beach clubs, rooftop bars, nightlife, markets, shopping and good food.
We’re not particularly interested in strenuous hikes, rock climbing or visiting temples and museums just to tick them off. We’d rather have a few worthwhile stops each day, with plenty of time to relax and enjoy the places we visit.
If you were planning our 21-day trip, how would you organize the 14 days in Phuket and 7 days in Bangkok?
In particular:
Would you choose Kamala + Patong or include Kata/Karon as a base?
Which beaches and swimming areas would you prioritize?
What are the best day trips, cafés, sunset spots, beach clubs and night markets?
What are your favourite affordable hotels under €80 per night?
Which Bangkok skincare clinics and local beauty products would you recommend?
How would you plan our Bangkok week and birthday celebration?
Any detailed recommendations, personal experiences or things you wish you’d known before your first Thailand trip would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Indian passport + Luxembourg residence permit — anyone actually transited UK (LHR↔LGW) without a visa?

Hi all,

Looking for real experience, not just the official rules (I've already checked those).

I'm an Indian passport holder with a valid physical Luxembourg residence permit. I have a British Airways itinerary in December that requires changing airports in London — Heathrow to Gatwick on the way out, Gatwick to Heathrow on the way back, with layovers of ~9–10 hours.

According to the gov.uk "Check if you need a UK visa" tool, I should qualify for Transit Without Visa (TWOV) because I hold a common-format EEA residence permit — this is listed as a valid exemption even for landside transit (i.e. clearing UK border control to switch airports).

Has anyone here actually done this — Indian passport + Luxembourg residence permit, changing airports in London — and gone through without a UK transit visa? Specifically interested in:

  • Did Border Force / the airline accept the Luxembourg permit without issue?
  • Any problems at check-in in Luxembourg (BA verifying documents before boarding)?
  • Anyone told to get a transit visa anyway despite meeting the TWOV criteria?

I've emailed UKVI directly but keep getting generic template replies, so real experiences from people who've actually flown this route would be much more useful right now. Thanks in advance!
