I did the jar test, can anyone give me a second opinion on what I'm looking at?

My interpretation is that the jar on the left has roughly 80% sand, 15% silt and 5% clay, and the jar on the right has about 90% sand and 10% silt.

But could it really be that much sand?? I've never looked at the garden and thought the soil was mostly sand, but then again I'm only now trying to take a serious crack at it.

My process was supposed to be to mark sand after 1 minute, mark silt line after 2 hours, then mark clay after settling overnight. I didn't end up marking the clay because there was no noticeable change from the previous day.

The left jar has three lines because after two hours I saw a dark layer and a light layer and assumed more sand had accumulated and that the lighter layer was silt. In retrospect the first line probably demarcates sand and silt, and the light layer is clay. But I also heard clay takes up to 48 hours to settle, not 2, so I'm not 100% sure what I'm looking at.

If anyone more knowledgeable could give me a second opinion, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks

How to install tuigreet on Debian - a quick guide

Thought I'd put this out there since it took me forever to figure things out and a lot of it isn't very well documented from what I found. This was done on Debian 13 XFCE

First you have to install Rust if you don't have it, instructions here: https://rust-lang.org/tools/install/

Then manually install greetd: https://git.sr.ht/~kennylevinsen/greetd#manually-from-source. (If it isn't clear, the first step is "git clone https://git.sr.ht/~kennylevinsen/greetd && cd greetd" then the written instructions)

Do the same for tuigreet: https://github.com/tuigreet/tuigreet#from-source

Make sure to follow the instructions for creating cache directory and configuring /etc/greetd/config.toml for tuigreet. Replace "sway" with "startxfce4" if you use XFCE

I had an issue with GREETD_SOCK not being defined, it seems that I either missed or had to reapply the "create cache directory" commands to get it working

There may be an issue with a PAM, I had to create a file at /etc/pam.d/greetd with the contents:

auth       required    pam_unix.so
account    required    pam_unix.so
session    required    pam_unix.so

I don't really understand this but it seems to work

Copy the provided Configuration Example template to /etc/tuigreet/config.toml (I seemed to have trouble with ~/.config/tuigreet/config.toml though it might work for you). Configure as you like, but delete or leave the "issue = false" line alone because enabling it seems to break things.

You may find that the configurations are not being applied. To ensure that they are, go to /etc/greetd/config.toml and add the line "--config /etc/tuigreet/config.toml" to the command.

There are some features that are easier to config here. For example, the time format. Add single quotes ( ' ) around the strf string to make it work, and put it before the --config line. Example:

command = "tuigreet --time-format '%a, %b %d %Y - %I:%M %p' --config /etc/tuigreet/config.toml . . ."

Lastly, logging in launches startxfce4 and shows some text about the X server starting up, to hide those messages you can modify the command like so:

command = "tuigreet . . . --cmd 'sh -c \"startxfce4 >/dev/null 2>&1\"'"

Maybe this will be helpful to someone. If you have any improvements or suggestions, I'd love to hear them as well

I replaced a faulty button on a handheld audio recorder (Tascam DR-40) but the problem persists

The button only works intermittently. It’s a tactile dome switch.

I removed the old switch and soldered a replacement, but the button still only works half the time. How might I diagnose and fix this issue?
