Buying a 2015 GTI with 240k km for $5.5k CAD, bad idea?

Hi everyone,

I don’t know a ton about cars, so I’m looking for some honest advice.

I’m a university student in Canada on a budget and trying to buy my first reliable car for under $7k CAD. I’ve checked multiple dealerships already, but most of what I’ve found either seems overpriced, rough condition, or like it’ll break down in a few months.

I stopped by a mechanic shop and the owner showed me a 2015 Volkswagen GTI. I test drove it and honestly loved it. No rust, no warning lights, drove great, and everything seemed solid.

The only thing making me nervous is the mileage, it has 240,000 km (~150k miles). He’s asking $5,500 CAD.

For people who know these cars:
- How long do GTIs usually last if maintained properly?
- Is 240k km too risky?
- Are repairs on these cars expensive?
- Would this be a bad idea for a student budget?
- Or should I keep looking for something more reliable?

I know GTIs are fun cars, but I’m more concerned about reliability and not getting stuck with huge repair bills.

Thank you!!
