Aqua-Hot 400D flame sensor cooked itself… worth replacing myself or am I opening a can of worms?
Pulled apart my Aqua-Hot 400D today after dealing with random shutdowns for the last couple weeks, and this is what I found. The flame sensor looks absolutely toasted — covered in soot/carbon buildup and the tip looks pretty rough compared to the photos I’ve seen online.
The annoying part is the heater sometimes still fires up, so I kept thinking it was a fuel or airflow issue. Meanwhile I’ve been resetting the unit every morning just to get hot water long enough for a shower before work. Finally got tired of babysitting it and started digging deeper.
I found this replacement sensor on Amazon while looking for parts:

Has anyone here tried this one specifically with a 400D? Did it solve the issue long term or just temporarily?
Also wondering how bad this job actually is for a first timer. I’m comfortable with basic maintenance stuff, but once I started opening the burner assembly and saw all the soot/carbon buildup, I started questioning whether I should keep going or just pay someone who actually knows Aqua-Hot systems.
