How can I bring this overgrown lilac back under control without killing it?
I love the lilac bush but I'm not sure how to reduce it's size safely without killing it, and then maintain that properly so it blooms well. Only the outer couple of inches of the bush has leaves. It's has been a battle to barely contain it enough to use the walkway since we bought this house. I trim it once a year but it's not enough.
I'd be thrilled if I could somehow halve the size and keep it healthy!
