Keep stock or mod? Seeking to sound as Telecastery as possible

Keep stock or mod? Seeking to sound as Telecastery as possible

I’m building a collection of very cheap approximations of classic guitar styles for recording and writing, it’s been really fun (1 Les Paul style and 2-4 Strat styles so far, all for a few hundred dollars each). I was able to pick up this Squier Sonic series used for $150 and I already love it.

I know people say Squier pickups and guts are trash but wondering if any Tele aficionados could tell me how close they got with this Sonic series - what, if anything, would you change to make it sound closer to a 1950’s production floor Fender model? Maybe pickups if anything?

I noticed after buying it that its body is slightly thinner than an original, the strings are strung through the bridge plate instead of the body, imo all contributing to a slightly thinner sound (neck is thinner too). But it still sounds like a Tele when I play some Joe Walsh riffs on it. I could always just roll the tone knob down a bit more and keep everything stock, unless the investment into pickups or anything else seems necessary. What would you do?
