Jobs

It’s really just the flair. I desperately need a job during the school year. I’ve applied to or called multiple places about a job. Corporate pledges like 7-brew have no direct line of contact. Other places are not hiring right now. Just trying to get suggestions for places that need workers preferably downtown. Do more people start hiring come August?

Substitute teacher suspension advice

Hi everyone! I’m making this post for my mom because she knows nothing about reddit.
After losing her job during covid, my mom’s mostly been working as a substitute teacher in NYC schools through subcentral. Up until now she’s had a perfect track record and no problems.
For the last week she’s been going to a specific school, which I will not name because I’m unsure how long putting all this will affect her case. Anyway at that school, she’s complained multiple times to me how she feels discriminated against and disliked because of her race, and the secretaries who give her assignments treat her miserably. This might have some bearing, I’m not sure.
Either way, yesterday and Monday my mom was given a class that is notoriously uncontrollable, and I’m sure the teachers here know how terrible the kids are at some schools because of how lax NYCDOE policy is. As a result of this, the class was almost impossible to control, and my mom phoned down to the office several times as she is instructed to do when they get out of control. My mom also, as instructed, kept a list of names of the particularly uncontrollable kids, and when one kid was inciting absolute chaos, threatened to call the principals office to report him directly. She says that he said something along the lines of “do that and see what happens”. She did report him.

Anyway, later at the end of the day, the secretary calls and asks her if she touched any of the students, which my mom denies. The secretary says that one student complained with witnesses (the other kids in the class) and that the principal will be up soon. The principal puts my mom in the teachers lounge for the rest of the day, and when she gets home she gets an email that the school has filed a complaint against her. Today she received an email saying she’s been suspended while they investigate, and she cod face consequences up to and including termination.

I want to take this opportunity to say that my mom definitely did not touch anyone. That’s not her style, and she raised me and my two siblings. Also she’s been working at this job for more than 2 yrs now wout a spot on her record. The problem she has is that she’s been given no opportunity to tell her side of the story. She doesn’t even know what the complaint is bc the only thing the email said is “professional misconduct”. She only knows the touching thing bc the secretary called and asked her, which I guess she’s not supposed to do that. She was told to contact uft for support but uft j said they’re busy and they’ll call back and my mom is absolutely devastated about this because more than the job, she’s mentally equating this to some serious criminal charge, which I know it isn’t.

Any advice or next steps? Should we get a lawyer? This bureaucracy bs is making everything incredibly difficult. Please help.
