Desktop Focus Issues with 2 displays
Problem Description
I’m facing a strange Windows 11 focus issue related to desktop interaction, especially when using multiple monitors and virtual desktops.
Setup
- Windows 11
- Dual-monitor extended display setup
- 4 virtual desktops configured
- Main display + secondary extended display
Main Symptoms
- On the main monitor, desktop icons become unclickable or behave as if the desktop itself is not focused.
- The taskbar remains clickable and active, but the desktop area does not properly receive focus.
- Clicking desktop icons or even right clicking on the main screen often does nothing initially.
- The issue does not occur on the extended/secondary monitor — desktop interaction there behaves normally.
- The problem appears more noticeable when:
- switching virtual desktops,
- using split screen,
- or after multitasking between monitors/apps.
- It feels like Windows focus is stuck on something invisible or the shell is losing focus.
Troubleshooting Already Attempted
Explorer / Shell Related
- Restarted
Windows Explorerfrom Task Manager - Fully killed and relaunched
explorer.exe - Restarted PC multiple times
Focus / UI Checks
- Tried clicking taskbar first before desktop
- Tried minimizing all windows using:
Win + D - This works- Show Desktop button - This works
- Checked whether hidden fullscreen apps were stealing focus - Found None
Virtual Desktop Related
- Switched between multiple virtual desktops
- Tested behavior on different desktops
- Closed apps on other desktops
- When I close all Virtual desktops, problem disappears
Multi-Monitor Related
- Tested behavior on secondary monitor
- Observed issue mainly affects primary monitor
- Verified display is in “Extend” mode
- Tried changing primary display temporarily
Input / Interaction Checks
- Tried both mouse and touchpad/input devices
- Checked if icons could be selected with keyboard navigation
- Tried refreshing desktop (
F5)
Windows Settings / System
- Checked for stuck tablet mode behavior
- Verified no obvious overlay software causing issue
- Tried safe/reduced interaction scenarios
- Issue persists after reboot
Additional Observations
- The desktop itself behaves as if it is “behind” another invisible layer.
- Taskbar interaction still works, which makes it seem like only the desktop window/shell focus is affected.
- Since the secondary monitor behaves differently, this may be related to:
- Windows 11 multi-monitor focus handling
- Virtual desktop bugs
- Explorer shell focus state
- GPU/display compositor issue
- DWM/Desktop Window Manager behavior
Looking For
Trying to determine whether this is:
- a known Windows 11 bug,
- a DWM/focus issue,
- GPU driver related,
- multi-monitor + virtual desktop conflict,
- or something corrupted in Explorer/shell behavior.
Any debugging suggestions, logs, registry fixes, or known causes would help.
