Reolink is forcing users to buy their HUB to unlock basic features
I contacted Reolink support about FTP functionality, and the answer I got was honestly shocking.
Basically:
- If you use their cloud service - everything works fine, no extra hardware needed
- If you want to use your own FTP server - suddenly you must buy a Reolink Home Hub or NVR
So let me get this straight…
You can upload footage to THEIR cloud directly from the battery camera without any hub,
but if you want to use your OWN storage (FTP/NAS), you are forced to buy extra hardware?
Support literally confirmed this in email.
This has nothing to do with battery saving or technical limitations - I even run the camera with a solar panel, so power is not an issue at all.
It feels like a clear artificial limitation designed to push users into either:
- paying for their cloud subscription
- or buying unnecessary extra hardware (the Hub)
Honestly, this is disappointing. It looks less like a technical decision and more like a money-driven ecosystem lock.
I used to like Reolink, but this really changed my view.
If any Reolink support staff reads this, feel free to clarify how this makes sense from a user perspective. Because right now it looks like a forced ecosystem money gathering lock rather than a technical limitation.
