Surefeed connect just died?

I have had these feeders for my four cats for the last few years. Yesterday out of the blue I noticed that one cat’s feeder (which is just shy of 4 years old) was abnormally slow to open - I would have to press the button a few times before the lid would finally open. Then last night I noticed my cat sort of scratching at it to try and get to his food because the feeder was not opening. I hit the button, nothing (no motor noise at all). Lights still worked when I tried to factory reset, but again, no lid movement or motor noise and the feeder was no longer showing as a device/connected to the hub. I changed the batteries, cleaned the whole thing and tried everything again, still nothing so I assume the motor has just completely died.

I thankfully happened to have an extra feeder on hand as I’d bought one for a long-term foster cat who has since been adopted, so I was able to get that set up for my cat without much disruption to him. But now I’m paranoid about the other feeders dying and wondering if I need to shell out yet another $250 to have another backup on hand. Is this just the lifespan for these things? I’m not really mechanically inclined so replacing/rewiring the motor is probably not feasible even if that’s a possibility.

DEXA scan?

Hi bitches, where are we getting DEXA/bone density scans these days? My doctor sent a referral to Fairfax Radiology, and their next available appointment is…December. When I’ll be out of the country.

Waiting until 2027 to get this done seems ridiculous. Any recommendations on providers with quicker appointments? Ideally ones that take insurance (Carefirst BCBS), but OOP is also fine as I think the cost is only around $200.

Pricing question for sitters

I’m looking to hire a sitter for some upcoming travel as my regular non-Rover sitter is unavailable. I have four cats, and prefer to have someone stay at the house for longer trips so they get a little more attention than just drop ins.

However, I’ve noticed something that seems odd when looking at pricing for house sitting. For most of the sitters I’m looking at, the fee for additional cats seems extremely high - so for example, a sitter’s fee for housesitting is $60/day, and then the fee for each additional cat is $30. So I would be paying $150/day for 4 cats, but would pay only $60/day if I only had one.

I understand there should be additional charges for additional pets and definitely want to pay fairly, but this seems very high, considering the incremental amount of additional work - my cats are all healthy, are fed the same thing 2x day and litter boxes scooped 2x/day - it’s a total of about 30 mins of active work total. Can a sitter explain if there’s something justifying this that I’m not thinking of, or if this is not in fact customary and I should keep looking?

Litter Lens splitting visits

I’ve been using the Litter Lens for a few months - I have four cats and three boxes, each of which has a Litter Lens. They have generally been pretty good/accurate, however, in the last few days I’ve noticed they’ve started splitting one visit into two or even three, leading to “excessive use” alerts.

I’ve gone back and watched the videos and the cats are not leaving the box and coming back in, the video is simply just cutting one visit into multiple clips, which then record as multiple visits. For example, for one of my cats, I got an “excessive use” alert that he’d used the box 7 times today. When I looked at the video, one was a mis-ID (ID-ing my shorthaired small gray cat as the much larger fluffy brown tabby), and then a 47-second visit was ID’d as and broken down into three separate visits.

After going through the videos, this has happened with 3 of the 4 cats and in a second camera/box as well. Is this a glitch in the newest update that anyone else is experiencing (they are all running 0.0.6.51), or is there a setting I can change to fix this?

PSA - your pregnant feral is NOT CUTE

Maybe I’m just in a bad mood after getting yet another email today from one of the rescues I foster for begging for foster space since our rural partner shelters are overwhelmed with kittens and euthanizing for space, but the “aw, the feral I feed is going to have kittens” posts and comments are sending me over the edge. Feeding cats without TNRing them is incredibly irresponsible and ultimately inhumane - it makes them healthier, and healthier cats have more kittens more frequently. The majority of those kittens (75%!) statistically won’t make it, and will suffer and die - predation, hit by a car, disease…and pregnancy also increases risks to the mother cat of pyometra and cancer.

TNR and spay abort because there are already TOO MANY KITTENS. If you don’t know how or can’t afford it, and you are in the US, there are a million resources online - including shelters with low cost or free TNR programs. I personally have loaned my trap to people who have reached out to me online, and someone I connected with on a rescue site hooked me up with a free spay appointment for my first feral when the shelter wasn’t responding, and I have friends who do TNR almost every weekend for people who cannot or will not do it themselves. If you have time to comment on Reddit, you have time to look into available resources.

Rant over and pic of one of my backyard ferals on her way to her spay (ironically, on Mothers’ Day - yay no more kittens!).

ETA - thanks for the awards! It looks like my late night rant hit a nerve with a lot of people. It’s reassuring to see how many people are out there doing this work and helping ferals!
