Hi guys, I’m looking into buying my first supermoto. I’m not completely new to motorcycles, but I’ve always had bikes that required much less maintenance, so I’ve never really done any major work on them myself. Still, I’m pretty comfortable with tools and I’m more than willing to learn.

My idea was to start with basic maintenance such as oil changes, valve checks, and chain maintenance. Valve checks don’t seem too complicated, but if I ever had to open the engine, I would take it to a mechanic.

As for riding, it would mainly be a “fun” bike. I don’t think I’d daily it. I’d mostly use it on weekends for short trips with friends, riding mountain passes, and occasionally during the week when I don’t feel like taking the car. It wouldn’t be my only or primary means of transportation. I also don’t think I’d ride more than 3,000–4,000 km per year.

Regarding the bike, if you’re not familiar with it, it uses the KTM RFS 525 engine but with a different frame and suspension setup.

Based on what I’ve said about how I’d use it and the type of maintenance I’d be willing to do, do you think this supermoto could be a good choice for me, or would it be safer to go for something more beginner-friendly like a DR-Z?

Also, is there anything in particular that I should look out for when buying this bike? For example, are there any common issues with the motor or specific things I should check on the RFS 525 engine before buying?

Ciao a tutti, vorrei avere qualche consiglio su quale moto scegliere dopo un paio d’anni di pausa.

Ho iniziato a 17 anni, al momento ne ho 22, con un Aprilia rs125 che ho usato fino a un paio di anni fa’. Mi sono poi stufato perché non avevo nessuno con cui uscire e la moto non mi divertiva più come all’inizio.

Adesso avrei trovato un gruppetto con cui fare qualche uscita quindi l’idea di tornare sulle due ruote si sta’ facendo sempre più seria.

Ho quindi cominciato a guardarmi intorno per qualche usato. Sarei orientato su un SM principalmente perché sono abbastanza leggeri e sono divertenti da guidare. L’idea iniziale era un 450 o un 500 ma mi sono reso conto che tra manutenzionI e affidabilità rischio di uscirne pazzo. L’idea era quindi di andare o su un KTM 690/ Husky 701 di questi mi preoccupano un po’ il peso e la sella larga. Ho inoltre letto che non si comportano come un vero SM. L’altra opzione che mi convince un po’ di più è prendere un vecchio Suzuki DRZ400 SM. Da quello che ho letto il motore è praticamente indistruttibile e facile da mantenere anche se ha poca potenza, inoltre dicono che sia più simile a un SM. Inoltre avrebbe il vantaggio che potrei cominciare a smanettarci un po’ e acquisire la manualità per mantenermi un 450 fra qualche anno.

Per quanto riguarda la patente al momento ho la A2 ma l’ho conseguita a 18 anni quindi potrei tranquillamente fare il passaggio ad A con le 7 ore in scuola guida. Quindi non credo sia un problema.

Se avete esperienza con una di queste moto o se avete qualche consiglio ve ne sarei grato.
