(i want to preface this by saying that my cat has been to the vet several times, and has no
medical issues whatsoever. he’s had a clean bill of health every time he’s been to the vet) about two and a half years ago, i adopted at cat while at college, he’s now 3 yrs old. he’s orange, and we think he’s a maine coon and tabby mix. at home, i have three other cats, two siamese that are 6 yrs old, and a black cat that is 4 yrs old. my cat has some very interesting behaviors when it comes to using the litter box. he’s fully litter box trained, and when i’d have him at school and my apartment, where he’s the only cat, he always pees in the litter box, but he picks and chooses when he’ll poop in the litter box. there’s no one specific thing we can point to that would make sense for him to not poop in the litter box. if it were just when it’s dirty, that would make sense, but half the time i’ll clean it and he’ll poop on the floor, but then the next day he’ll poop in the litter box.

the current issue we’re having is him sharing the litter box. for context, he’s always come home with me, and thus to my three other cats, for summer and winter breaks, and he never had any issues with peeing in the litter box until the last time I brought him home and now. he is straight up refusing to pee in the litter box, and is instead peeing LITERALLY anywhere else (on the couch, on the floor, in a suitcase, you name it). i really don’t know what brought this on, because he’s shared the litter box before, and we also had another cat that was my roommate’s living with us last year, and this was not an issue. i don’t know what to do, it’s not really feasible for him to have his own litter box that the other cats don’t use unless i keep him locked away from them, and none of the cats would want that. again, he’s been to the vet multiple times and has no medical issues that we know of, this is fully behavioral, and tbh we think he’s just doing it to be a bitch.

also apparently he’ll poop outside of the litter box (mind you when he does this, he poops RIGHT NEXT TO IT), and then scratches at the litter so we think he’s using the litter box. it’s also not like he’s never pooped in the litter box, he has, many many times. i really just don’t know what to do, bc i love him to death but i can’t be cleaning up cat poop and pee every single day.
