"Word of Mouth" Advertising...

So I understand that Word of mouth referrals are the best way to stay busy. It's as simple as do a good job, stand out from everybody else, and people will refer you.

What I'm struggling with is getting in the door in the first place. I got a few customers already by walking around neighborhoods and talking to people. But it seems to be a very slow process. There are also some days where I don't even get any calls or do any estimates.

I've also advertised on Facebook for a month with no leads.

Should I keep doing the old fashioned walk around leaving flyers? Or how did you guys start? Any advice would be appreciated.

Edit: not sure if it matters much or not, but my specialty is drywall repairs/taping. I have a carpentry background so I do other handyman work as well, but that's my bread and butter.

Is this homeowner trying to scam me?

I received a text from a homeowner who wants to do a deep cleaning of their new home. They also asked us to show up a little bit later because there would be appliance deliveries and it would be chaotic to do everything at once. Nothing seemed too suspicious at this point.

However, the homeowner then asked me to have somebody there to oversee the deliveries of their appliances. They wanted a separate quote for this. He said that he is tied up at the Air Force Base so he won't be able to present for the deliveries.

The only thing I'm worried about is him not being there and us not receiving payment once the job is done. Usually we pick up checks that are at the home once we are done.

What would you guys do in this situation? TIA

Edit: Thank you guys a ton for your replies! I knew something felt off, but didn't consider exactly what could go wrong. I had no idea that these kinds of scams exist where they "pay you extra" for your services then pull the rug. We appreciate all of the advice!

Should I take the job....

I couldn't record much more since I was in a homeowner's home and didn't want to make them uncomfortable, but basically this hole is about 30+ feet high in the ceiling. I'm still getting my business off the ground and just have a few jobs lined up so I'm very tempted to take the job.

Would you guys take the job? Is it even worth it to rent the right scaffold/ladder to get it done?

Bulletin Boards in and Around Des Moines?

Hey everyone, I'm just curious about what bulletin boards are in and around Des Moines nowadays. Casey's used to have them but it seems like most of them don't have them anymore. Just trying to get Word of my drywall repair business out there. Thanks in advance!

Collecting Deposit on Big Jobs...

Okay, so I know it's important to collect 50% deposit on big jobs. However, how and when do you collect the deposit?

For example, I am bidding a sizable taping and texture job, but the homeowner is an older guy that is almost an hour away. Do I collect a check from him the day before the job begins (potentially Tuesday)? Or do I collect payment from him the morning of the job since it is far away? Probably a dumb question but figured I'd ask rather than regret making a big mistake.
