30A breaker but only 10/2 wire? Help me understand

I am re-plumbing a previously deleted small kitchen. Prior owner had used the galvanized plumbing vent to route wiring to a loft bedroom in the late 1960’s.

The plumbers pulled all the wires and pulled all the breakers out and left them on the ground. Box had a two-space 30 amp, a 20 amp, and three fifteen amps. There are four wires, one of which is 10-2 with a ground. It goes up to old electric baseboard heating. Another goes to an in-roof attic vent fan my parents had put in. (I think some contractor screwed them and added it unnecessarily, as the space probably only needed a loved vent in the eave.

Anyway — I can’t see what use the 30 amp double breaker would be. I thought I’d find a Red/Black/White/Ground wire for it.

Is there a way to use that 30 amp for just a Back/White 120v setup? The front of the subpanel has “Loft Baseboard” written in on spaces 1 and 2. I really wish the plumbers had not pulled all the breakers out so I could use what was written. :/

Any advice would be appreciated. I live out of town and have not had an easy time getting an electrician. The one operation who would come quickly is a large dispatched business and is $$$. I did contract one job with them, for a 220v electric stove outlet and new 50a breaker in the main box. But I don’t want to spend that kind of money on a simple re-connect

Any idea how to get to these deadbolt screws?

I am trying to remove a shlage deadbolt but can't access the two Philips screws behind the deadbolt cylinder. There's nothing on the exterior when removing the lock faceplate. Any ideas how to access these?

What anchors are you using for this heavy folding glass door into tile

I'd like to mount this into a fiberglass tub surround (should I even attempt?) and trying to figure out what anchor would be best, it's pretty heavy.

Best way to adhere metallic mosquito screen to a metal window frame?

I bought this stainless steel screen for my window and I want to know the best way to put on the metallic frame without using screws or rivets. The screen is very light in weight. Is neutral silicone better than magnetic tape?

How can I cut a clean cable notch in this flip-top side table?

I bought a side table that's 11.8" deep, and I'd like to add a cable pass-through notch to the front edge of the flip-up lid (see photo), instead of only using the side opening. I want to cut a smooth half-circle opening so cords can pass through while the lid is closed. What's the best way to make that cut clean and smooth, and how can I finish the edges to match the rest?

How would you best replace this?

Client doesn't like that the steps angle downwards and the top board is splitting, I don't like that's it's screwed into stucco with seemingly no ledger boards and sitting directly on concrete.

I was thinking about just replacing it with box style steps with composite shims for the bottom so I don't have to screw into stucco. Any thoughts?

Hitting metal 3/4” behind drywall everywhere when trying to mount a TV

I’m trying to mount a 55” TV in a 2014 apartment building and every pilot hole stops at about 3/4” depth.

This happens whether I’m on what I think is a stud or not, and at multiple heights across the wall. The wall has a coax outlet and is the obvious TV wall.

When I put the drill bit back in the hole and tap the obstruction, it sounds metallic. The drill keeps spinning but won’t go any deeper. No metal shavings. The wall sounds pretty much the same everywhere when I knock on it.

I also can’t angle the bit and find a cavity behind whatever I’m hitting. It feels solid.

Interior wall, not exterior.

I’ve never hung a tv before anywhere so any advice would be appreciated.

Question for other pros: What do you think of these low profile shower bases?

I keep having customers that want these installed. I agree that they are attractive and the install is easy but I don't like that the flange that goes against the wall is held on with screws and sealed with silicone. Seems like a huge failure point that you're burying in a wall. I tried talking one customer out of it but they wanted it anyways so I said I can't warranty this. The one I installed was Castico but it seems like everyone is selling almost the same one under different names.

Other folks having these show up more? Any alternatives with a flange that molded on? I've seen Flexstone but they aren't as low profile and the surrounds are vinyl plastic, not composite.

Help need with older dryer not collecting lint properly

I’ve been having issues with my dryer that was with the house my husband and I purchased last summer. I believe what is happening is the lint trap isn’t sitting properly, so lint balls up and collects inside the hosing and where it releases outside so none of our clothes dry in the 1hr 30 min cycle. We clean the lint trap every cycle, and we clean outside very often since I think that can be dangerous if it builds up.

I have tried replacing that whole lint trap white plastic part, including the part that is screwed on to the dryer. Same issue. My question is, do we cut our losses and just get a new dryer as I believe this one is quite old. Or is there something else I can try? I fix medical equipment for a living so I’m not afraid to try something if I get pointed in the right direction.

Thanks!

How can I fix this?

My dog got a little too bite-y. I heard wood filler and sanding it is the best option but I’d just like to hear other options.

Customer Callback

I have done loads of exterior step railing installs for customers, they’ve always been happy and given me 5 stars for it. I quoted a customer over the phone and they got me a job with their neighbour as well for the railing install. Easy day, right? I did the neighbour’s railing first, went easy, paid in full.
I go to meet the other customer and when I see them I realize I should have bought the “ultra heavy duty” railing made of solid cast iron and cemented it into the ground if you catch my drift..
I did the install as usual as I would for any customer, I leave for the day and 2 weeks later I get a text saying it loosened.. I came back, lifted the bolts out, replaced them, added epoxy around bolts and under the rail base. Figured that’d be it, 2 more weeks later I get another text saying it has loosened.

The customer has offered to pay for my time and the material this time around.

How should I go about bulletproofing an aluminum railing?

The railing is secured with galv bolts running through anchors. The issue is the top step is a hollow pre-formed concrete slab about 2 inches thick and the anchors are about 4 inches.

Is there a toggle bolt that can be used outside and will withstand a lot of pressure?

Does this look stupid?

Faceplate was flush with the drywall but I added the trim and felt like it needed to be in front of trim so I brought it forward. I’m second guessing myself.

Help - where can I put the washing machine

I am about to move into a unit with a shared laundry.

There is 4 washing machines in the laundry and 2 sinks.

There are 5 units and I am the 5th unit moving in.

Any ideas how I can fit my washing machine in the unit?

I thought maybe I can put it where the small cabinet is (circled in red), but would the pump be strong enough to get water all the way over to the sink?

The circled tap is the only spare tap there is.

Anyone have an ideas?

Kind regards

How do you handle obnoxious dog owners?

you know the type, giant dumb as rocks but sweet and friendly Great Dane that constantly jumps on you and drools all over your tools and they say shit like “oh just put your knee up” or “he’s just being friendly he likes you that’s so cute!” Look, I love dogs but some of these people aren’t fit to own a damn cat because all they do is neglect the dog anyway and certainly don’t train them

So what do you say or do? “put the dog outside for the duration I’m here or find someone else”? Do you ask people before hand if they have dogs and tell them they need to be put away before you arrive? If they open the door and the smell of dog piss smacks you in the face, do you turn around and walk?

Recently discovered mold growth in bottom floor utility closet

Stumbled across this beauty of a situation tonight. Bottom floor of a 3 level coastal townhouse. The utility closet sits very close to directly below the laundry room. Any ideas where to start the investigation?
