Progress over the past year and a half

Progress over the past year and a half

This is a recap of the past 18 months of the search for CIA, as visualized by the changes to the 'Leads' tab of the Masterlist.

First, a brief rundown of how leads are categorized:

  • Newly added leads are tagged as "Newly Added" and generally posted near the top of the 'Leads' list.
  • More often than not, information is found that allows a lead to be classified as some degree of unlikely. Primarily, that classification is based on genre:
    • Bands that are the right genre, but differ from CIA's band in some notable way (style, voice, instruments used / not used) are typically categorized as "Less Likely".
    • "Unlikely" bands are usually not new wave, but a different (but still related) subgenre of rock music.
    • "Very Unlikely" bands are generally completely mismatched to CIA's genre (for example: jazz, blues, hardcore punk, heavy metal, folk, etc.).
    • In addition to the genre-based classification, if a band is particularly notable (if they have a Wikipedia page for instance), that band is moved one category lower (for example "Less Likely" → "Unlikely" or "Unlikely" → "Very Unlikely").
    • If the evidence for a given band's genre classification is particularly weak / circumstantial, that band is moved one category higher (for example "Very Unlikely → "Unlikely" or "Unlikely" → "Less Likely").
    • Lastly, a band may be marked as some degree of unlikely if they broke up too early (1983 or earlier) or formed too late (1985 or later).
  • Leads requiring more information to rule on, or those that remain unknown to us after a diligent search are tagged as: "Searching"
  • Bands that seem to be a good fit (right genre, not notable, Ontario bands that were active at the right time) are tagged as "Promising Lead"
  • As u/Successful-Bread-347 noted in this recent post, anyone may contact band members (or other leads) who have not already been contacted. We ask that you let us know here or on discord. We will then mark the lead as "In Progress"
  • Any time a band member is contacted and denies knowledge of "CIA", their band is marked as a "Contact Rule Out"

Trying to Identify an 80's Ontario Band (Song Recorded off CFNY in 1984)

I am trying to identify a song which was recorded off CFNY in late 1984. It was first posted to the internet in 2020 (link to the original YouTube upload), and has since become a pretty big internet mystery. The quality of that original recording is a little rough - this YouTube upload is the most popular "remaster". Across all the various reuploads, the song has close to 1 million views, and yet no one has been able to identify the band.

Song ID apps don't work - they only give false results.

Alan Cross, who started at CFNY in 1986, posted the song to his blog in 2021. He doesn't know the band.

David Marsden, Liz Janik, Ivar Hamilton, and Scot Turner (all from CFNY) have all been asked about the song and don't recognize it.

The prevailing opinion is that it is most likely a cassette recording (either a demo tape or an independently produced commercial tape) from a band local to CFNY's broadcast range. It could have been an entry in CFNY's annual Great Ontario Talent Search contest. Another possibility is that it was featured on "The Streets of Ontario", which aired independent bands that had records or tapes for sale in broadcast area record stores.

If anyone here happens to recognize the song or band please let me know. Suggestions, speculation, and wild guesses are also welcome.

NOW (weekly newspaper) archive

Now was a free weekly paper which began in 1981 and featured incredibly useful music notes and club listings (see the example below, which gives some info on the very obscure band, Icemen Dance)

https://preview.redd.it/swplc7y70x5h1.jpg?width=1367&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=857e06609a9ea9596ed31e7685257f75a3cb9375

Unfortunately, archived copies are not currently available online. According to this OCAD research guide, Now had been available via PressReader, but that is no longer the case.

I contacted Now and never got a response. I contacted PressReader and got the following response:

not very helpful...

McLaren Micropublishing has the entire run of Now on microfilm (see their Art/Architecture/Popular Culture catalog). McLaren Micropublishing was acquired by Coherent Digital in 2024. Parenthetically, I suspect this is when Now was removed from PressReader.

According to this 2024 press release from Coherent Digital, the McLaren microfilm collection was to be digitized and included in their Canada Commons module. I emailed Coherent Digital about Now and was told it is not included in Canada Commons:

There is one final option to acquire copies of Now: someone local to Toronto visits The Toronto Reference Library. Now should be available via the Microform Readers in the Humanities and Social Sciences section on the 2nd floor - the availability details lists the following:

>Collection: Hum & Soc Sci 2nd Fl Reference Microforms

Call no.: PER V. 20 NO. 21; 2001 (01) JAN 25

Holdings: v.1 (1981:Sep 10) - v.33:no.41/52 (2014:Jun 12/Aug 28

As far as I know, the Microform Readers should be free to use, and do not require a library card. It should also be free to scan pages and save those scans to a USB drive using the attached Windows 10 PC.

The most useful volumes for our search are going to be Vol. 3 (Sep 1983 - Sep 1984) and Vol. 4 (Sep 1984 - Sep 1985).

If anyone is local and is interested in acquiring copies of Now, please let us know (so we don't have multiple people duplicating the same task).

As a caveat, this might be a slightly tedious task. I suspect it may take a couple hours to find the relevant pages from all 104 editions (each volume has 52 weekly editions), and to scan and save those pages. Your efforts would be greatly appreciated.

Todd's Oldies does not exist

Regarding the Todd's Oldies lead, which has already been reasonably debunked by u/PangioOblonga in this post:

I decided to check with the commercial property management company that owns Manchester Commons, the shopping center which includes 377 South Willow Street. As a reminder, the CIA video and all 4 other videos posted to the Todd Gagne YouTube channel list 377 S. Willow St., Manchester NH as the location of Todd's Oldies.

In response to me asking if Todd's Oldies is a tenant, or was a tenant in the last year or so, they stated that they have no record of Todd's Oldies being a tenant.
