What We Know About 'Splash' So Far

One of the leads that came up after the CBC story on CIA was an email response from someone claiming to be friends with the singer of CIA. That person claimed the song was by "the French band, Splash, who actually did a lot of concerts in Canada in '83 and '84."

We've looked for bands called "Splash", but none that match CIA's genre have been found.

I've searched the Ontario and Quebec papers and haven't found any band called "Splash" advertised during that time period.

"Splash" also doesn't appear in the Toronto Gig Database.

Eight Seconds ruled out

Just for the official record so they aren't contacted again:

Thx @LunaTea for finding contact details for Eight Seconds (aka 8 Seconds). Marc Parent contacted and ruled out. A little on the too well known side but was worth asking as Marc is also well connected.

Quick thing. Not long after hearing CIA I was approached by a musician from Finland to collaborate on one of his tracks. I thought I’d share it here, because I’ve recently realized how much I was inspired by the lyrics to CIA….. Posted the link but it got removed. Sodiak: Across The Wall

Andrews and Fowler

Has anyone talked to Coral Andrews and Pete Fowler about this? Greg might have an idea as well.

Between the three of them, I'd hedge my bets they might have insight

Cool Interview

Cool Interview really amped me up. I also spent time to thank Ivar, and some of the other DJ's who've really helped us out over the years. It's so cool seeing a whole community come together like this.

Story about CIA to run on CBC this Monday

A month or so ago, I pitched the story about 1M views of CIA on YouTube to a bunch of Radio Stations in Canada.

I'm glad to say that Canada Broadcasting has picked it up as (it seems) a highlighted story, to be aired this Monday. This is the major Canada broadcaster.

It will be broadcast on at least the Kitchener Waterloo stations which are a focus of the search, and also online and may also play elsewhere on CBC.

The message I received was, "Still working on the story and we're planning a full rollout on Monday now."

I was interviewed, and Alan Cross who helped popularize the search some years ago was also interviewed which is amazing.

The message was: "It will be on the radio Monday, I believe at 7:40 a.m. The web story will go up at cbc.ca/kw at 6 a.m. that day - and the audio will be added in afterwards." Please listen in and someone please record.

They will also be pointing people to the subreddit.

Fingers crossed that the right person hears this and has the solution for us. Exciting times.

I think CIA may have been part of a Sunday broadcast special on CFNY called "The Pink Flamingo Room"

MAJOR EDIT: The pink flamingo room was a specialty broadcast of the Q107 radio station not CFNY, the commenter i am referring to likely made the mistake as the host of the segment originally worked for CFNY prior to moving stations. I am going to leave this up as i feel the video comment section still has potential clues and i want to poke around with this lead a little more before dismissing. I believe i have found the host of the radio segment and reached out to him, I will update if he responds/knows anything.

Edit 2: Jonny Spadina (real name John Morris) got back to me very quickly and confirmed he was the host. Unfortunately he did not do much of the record selection for the show but would instead give a theme to Bob Mackowycz who would then choose the songs for the show. Unfortunately it seems that Bob passed away a couple years ago but i am a bit unsure of if it was the father or son.

I recently was looking at the music video for one of the other tracks on the CIA cassette, "Radio Silence" - Blue Peter and the comment section seemed like a treasure trove, as most of them were talking about how big of fans they were of CFNY in the 80s.

Among them one stood out to me, mentioning a weekly Sunday night special called "The Pink Flamingo Room" which played obscure "cutting edge" music including Blue Peter.

To me this sounded like exactly the kind of broadcast that the original cassette could have been ripped from, as it contained multiple blue peter songs among other obscure artists. To me this would also make more sense then the great talent search as the other tracks on the cassette don't match the talent search theme as well.

I actually think i was able to find the lady who commented it's linkedin, but have not reached out as i feel that may be an inappropriate way to ask.

Some other gems i have found from these comments are some other obscure artists to look into, as well as a comment about there being parodies/unofficial songs played on CFNY

Possible studio chatting?

I decided to isolate the vocals. And I don’t know if it is just me but if you listen carefully I think you can hear the singer chatting with someone. It may just be me mishearing it but I think this could be something.

Has anyone looked into Musi-Video?

Musi-Video was a Canadian music video series that ran during 1980-1984. It featured a lot of lesser-known and up-and-coming bands, some local to Montreal. Here's their youtube channel. Some of the bands like Television Child and U & Francois Matte have little to no information about them outside of the uploads from the channel.
Information about Musi-Video is also far and in between, I can't find any list of bands/artists that were featured on the series. I can only go off the youtube channel and I'm not too sure if they uploaded every artist featured.
The channel is still actively posting videos, last being from just three weeks ago. I believe it could be worth contacting them.
The only reason why I believe this may not be worth looking into is the fact that the show only existed up until 1984. I can't find any information about the specific date it ended, but there is a chance it ended before the theorized timeframe of CIA. Also, the genres of music featured lean more towards synth pop and minimal wave, not post-punk, though they did upload music from bands like The Cure and Siouxsie And The Banshees.

Fellow people on this subreddit taught me not to make separate posts for each lead. So I will post multiple leads on one post and won’t post any more socan related stuff until it is all debunked.
