The owner of the PG where I stay recently installed solar panels. This month, she charged me ₹1200 for electricity, calculated as units consumed by my room × ₹12 per unit. There is one main meter for the property, but each room has its own sub meter to track individual consumption.
What doesn’t make sense is that I checked the total electricity bill for the entire property this month, and it is only ₹930. There are 6 PG rooms in total, yet my room alone is being charged more than the entire actual bill.
When I asked why the charges are still so high despite the installation of solar panels, she said that someone has to cover the cost of the solar setup.
My question is: why should tenants be forced to pay for a long term investment made for her property, especially when we are not going to live here permanently? And if the solar panels are reducing the actual electricity expense, why are tenants still being charged as if the full electricity cost is being paid normally?
