So my girlfriend’s birthday is coming up and I want to get her something on Steam in the 30-50 dollar range and I genuinely need some help with this one because money is really tight right now, I’m an Asian student and saving up anything extra is just hard, like it’s not something I can explain quickly but the short version is that disposable income basically doesn’t exist for me right now and I still really want to do something meaningful for her birthday because she deserves it.

The reason I’m asking for Steam specifically is because she’s really into indie games, not in a casual way, more like she has genuinely good taste in them. Her library has Papers Please and The Witness and Superhot in it, which if you know those games you know exactly the kind of person she is, she’s someone who wants a game to have a specific vision and fully commit to it, not just be fun but be deliberately designed in a way where you can feel every decision the developer made and why they made it. That’s a pretty specific thing to look for and she finds it consistently which I find honestly impressive.

So if anyone’s feeling generous and wants to help me get her something she’d actually love for her birthday I would really really appreciate it, it genuinely means a lot to me to be able to do this for her and right now I just can’t pull it off on my own. Thank you so much for even reading this!!

Hey everyone!

So let me explain why this one specifically. IO Interactive is the studio behind the Hitman World of Assassination trilogy, which is one of the most consistently excellent series of the last decade. What they do better than almost anyone else is give you a sandbox and let you figure out how to use it. Every Hitman level is basically a puzzle box where you can choose to be methodical and precise and silent, or you can choose to just see what happens if you do something stupid, and both approaches are equally valid and equally entertaining. The levels are dense with systems that interact with each other in ways you don’t always expect, and mastering them takes a genuinely long time because there’s always something else to find or try. That’s the studio making 007 First Light and that matters a lot to me because the DNA of what makes Hitman great is basically perfect for a Bond game.

I should also mention that I’m a longtime Bond fan beyond just the games, and a longtime Hitman fan too. The films, the books, the whole thing. There’s something about the character that has always worked on me in a way that’s hard to fully explain, the combination of competence and controlled chaos, the way Bond always looks like he has a plan even when he clearly doesn’t, the specific kind of cool that the franchise has maintained across decades of very different takes on the same character. I grew up with it and it’s stayed with me. And Hitman is the same story honestly, I’ve put a genuinely embarrassing amount of time into the World of Assassination trilogy, replaying missions trying different approaches, finding new routes, figuring out the most elaborate way to do something that could have been done simply in thirty seconds. So a game that combines both of those things, the two franchises I keep coming back to, is not something I can be normal about.

Bond as a character has had a complicated history in games. There have been great ones, GoldenEye obviously, but for a long time the games weren’t really doing the license justice in a way that felt like it came from people who genuinely understood what makes Bond work. IO Interactive are people who have spent years making a game about a methodical, adaptable, always composed assassin who reads a room and figures out the best way through it. That is Bond. The overlap is so obvious that when the announcement came out it felt almost inevitable in hindsight, and the more I’ve seen of First Light the more confident I am that they actually understand what they’re making.

The origin story angle is what really interests me beyond just the IO pedigree though. This is Bond before he’s Bond, a young Naval air crewman who gets pulled into the Double 0 programme after a heroic act and then has to figure out very quickly what kind of agent he wants to be. He’s described as resourceful and sometimes reckless which is such a good starting point because it leaves room for him to actually develop across the game rather than just being fully formed from the opening scene. The story apparently involves a rogue agent, a deep conspiracy, and a mentor called Greenway who Bond is paired with reluctantly, which is a classic setup but in IO’s hands I trust it completely. These are the people who built an entire trilogy around a single character and made every entry feel different and interesting, they know how to construct a narrative around a specific kind of person.

The gameplay from everything I’ve seen looks exactly like what I hoped for. You can go silent, using stealth and gadgets and talking your way through situations, or you can go loud with firepower and just deal with the consequences. That choice being genuinely meaningful rather than just cosmetic is something IO has proven they can do and seeing it applied to a Bond setting is something I’ve been thinking about since the announcement. Iconic vehicles, infiltrating high security locations, missions in locations that actually look like Bond locations rather than generic action game environments. It all looks right in a way that’s hard to articulate but easy to recognize when you see it.

It releases May 27th which is right around when exams end and I’ll actually have time to sit down with something properly, which is honestly ideal timing. Pre-ordering also gets you the Deluxe Edition upgrade for free which includes early access and a bunch of cosmetics, so the timing of this request matters a little.

As for why I’m making a request instead of just buying it, I genuinely can’t afford it right now. Money is tight at the moment and games aren’t a priority when other things need paying for first. It’s not a complicated situation, it’s just the reality. I just figured it was worth trying.
