MacBook Air M2 water damage — could a bad lid angle sensor be making it think the lid is closed?

I have a water-damaged MacBook Air M2 that still powers on, charges, works on an external display, and Touch ID still works. But the built-in display only gets detected sometimes, flickers occasionally, and most of the time the Mac seems to think the lid is closed.

I already replaced the trackpad ribbon cable and tested another trackpad, so I do not think that is the main issue anymore. Apple Diagnostics showed a lid angle sensor failure, and the internal display/lid behavior has been really inconsistent. The external display is also much more stable when the Mac is plugged in.

Has anyone had an M2 Air do this from a bad lid sensor or hinge/display-side issue? I am trying to figure out if replacing the lid sensor is worth trying, or if this usually points to a bigger display assembly or board-side problem.
