Minecraft Switch local play not working

So what's up with the switch version constantly displaying the person I'm trying to join as being in the menu when they're actually in the world? Both of us are on the same version and on local mode, were on the same WiFi, and we're both verified as being over 18. What more does this temperamental, toddler ahh software want?

Do you think she's a calico?

This is my cat Anna, we're not sure what breed she is. She has calico colouring but it's very sparse. (Btw she has a few more black and orange spots on the top of the head)
