Base vs Moving itineraries?
I'm trying to gauge whether people enjoy moving itineraries or having a base while visiting Japan.
On my first trip I moved constantly (Tokyo, Tateyama Alpine Route, Kanazawa, Hiroshima, Kyoto, Hakone).
For my second trip, I'm trying to decide whether I do something similar in Kyushu, or base myself in Tokyo and do a mix of day trips and city exploring.
I enjoy exploring cities, but enjoy nature/hikes more.
Benefit of basing myself in Tokyo is that I have more freedom to choose day trips based on weather (e.g. Fuji on a clear day), whereas Kyushu travelling will be fairly fixed and at the mercy of the weather (early March).
I’ve been trying to improve my sleep system, but it’s not quite there yet.
Sleep system:
- Durston Xdome 1+ tent
- therm-a-rest Xtherm mat
- an old reactor extreme bag liner
- Sea to summit ascent ACii (old version)
More details on bag:
- 750+ loft duck down
- 550g fill weight
- lower comfort rating -10c / 14F for men
Issue:
I run really cold. I always freeze when camping overnight. I recently improved my mat to the Xtherm. I tested this out recently overnight in about 5c / 41F. For once I wasn’t uncomfortably cold, but that temp felt like my limit before I started to be. I wasn’t warm. I had a hot meal soon before getting into bed, and did a few jumping jacks. I wore a 180g merino base layer top/bottoms, merino comfy pants, jersey, hat and gloves.
Goal: warm/comfy in -5c / 23F without piling on the clothes. Just want to wear a merino belayer.
I feel like my setup is pretty good, but how can I improve it to meet my goal?
