assisted living in austin: what do you wish you knew before choosing a community?

i've recently started helping a family member look into assisted living in austin, and honestly i wasn't prepared for how overwhelming the process would be. there are so many options, and every place seems to have glowing reviews on its website.

we've done a few tours already, but it's hard to know what questions we should really be asking and what things might become important after someone has been living there for a while.

for those who have helped a parent, grandparent, or other relative move into assisted living, what factors ended up mattering the most? were there any red flags you missed during tours? and were there things you initially thought were important that turned out not to matter much?

i'd also be interested in hearing about the overall experience. if you had to go through the process again, what would you do differently when evaluating assisted living communities in austin?

what's the weirdest thing you've done because nobody else was around to see it?

living alone has made me realize how many strange habits i have when there's no audience. i've caught myself having full conversations with the TV, celebrating small victories like i won an award, and eating dinner at completely unreasonable hours

the freedom is great, but sometimes i wonder what other people would think if they saw my daily routine 😅

what's your weirdest "living alone" habit?
