Boredom is the mother of creativity
I’m between projects this weekend and apparently my brain doesn’t know how to relax.
My son is 11, autistic, mildly dyslexic, loves video games, and is extremely motivated by earning money. I was trying to figure out how to keep a little structure in his summer without turning it into summer school.
What started as “maybe I should make him do 20 minutes of typing” somehow turned into me building a full HTML app.
It now has:
A “Kid Bank” that tracks money earned
Goal tracking (Minecraft, Robux, Lego, etc.)
Typing quests
Reading quests
Story writing quests
Dad challenges
Adventure bonuses for things like kayaking, swimming, board games, and having friends over
Achievement badges
A story vault
A summer activity log
The funny thing is that I think I enjoyed building it more than he enjoys using it.
Parenting has a weird way of making you spend 6 hours solving a problem that could have been solved with a piece of paper and a sticker chart.
Curious what other parents have come up with.
What started as a simple summer incentive somehow turned into a full-blown RPG for an 11-year-old.
Its simple stupid it works…
