Is it worth it?

Hola! Gracias!!

Hi everyone! I'm planning a two-week solo trip to the Mexican Caribbean in mid-November, and I'm having a hard time deciding where to base myself.

My original plan was to stay in Playa del Carmen, but I've been reading that the beaches there aren't that great, and that Cancun actually has much nicer beaches.

So, what's the main reason people recommend staying in Playa del Carmen so much? Aside from its convenient location and easy access to other destinations, is it actually a good place to enjoy the beach?

Since spending time at beautiful beaches is one of my main priorities, would you recommend staying somewhere else instead? And if so, where?

Thanks so much for your help!

Gracias!

immigration controls in Mexico

Hi! I’m planning a solo trip to the Riviera Maya in November. It’ll be my first time in Mexico, and I’ve heard a few stories about immigration that made me a little nervous.

For context, I’m planning to stay for around 14 days and will probably split my time between Playa del Carmen, Cancun, Isla Mujeres, and Holbox. HOWEVER, I’d really prefer not to book my entire trip in advance. I’d like to have the flexibility to decide where to stay as I go, depending on the weather, how much I’m enjoying each place, and the sargassum situation.

For example, I don’t want to book two nights in Holbox in advance only to end up there when it’s raining, especially knowing that the island can get pretty flooded.

Is this a realistic way to travel in this area, or could I have issues with immigration when entering Mexico if I only have accommodation booked for the first few days? I would, of course, have a return flight already booked.

Also, in general, is traveling this way a bad idea in terms of prices and availability? I’ve done this several times in Europe and never had any issues booking accommodation as I went, but I know every destination is different.

Thanks!
