PhonePe is charging extra on electricity bill payments and pre-ticking a daily gold purchase. Watch out.

Paying my MSEDCL electricity bill on PhonePe today, I noticed two things that look like dark patterns.

Pre-ticked "Save in 24K gold daily ₹30/day"

On the bill screen, the gold savings option was already checked, with fine print saying a gold account will be created. If you tap "Proceed to Pay" without looking carefully, you could be opted into a recurring daily investment.

The CCPA's Dark Patterns Guidelines, 2023 cover pre-selected options and hidden charges, and these count as unfair trade practices under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.

I've blurred my personal details in the screenshots and am filing complaints with:

- PhonePe's grievance and nodal officer

- National Consumer Helpline (1915)

- CCPA (com-ccpa@gov.in)

- RBI Ombudsman, if needed

What you can do:

- Share and make people aware elder ones

- Always check the final amount against your actual bill.

- Untick the gold option before paying.

- Tap "Show breakup" to see what you're being charged.

- Report it on the Jagriti app or consumerhelpline.gov.in. More complaints make action more likely.

A little about me — I’m 27, 6'1", working as a Senior Software Developer in Pune. Originally from Chhattisgarh. Currently earning around ₹33 LPA.

I’m very much a tech/engineering nerd and genuinely enjoy figuring out how things work. I’m the kind of person who can get unnecessarily excited about a technical problem and spend hours trying to solve it. 😄

I’m also quite serious about fitness. Gym is a regular part of my life, and I enjoy maintaining a fit/muscular physique. I’m fair, don’t smoke or drink, and I’m an eggitarian.

Lifestyle-wise, I’m more of a minimalist. I don’t really chase expensive things or an Instagram-worthy lifestyle. I’m also not much of a travel buff — 1–2 good vacations a year sounds perfect to me. I’d rather have a comfortable everyday life than constantly be planning the next trip.

Photography isn’t really my thing either. 😅 Although I’m completely open to learning if you’re someone who enjoys photography and is willing to teach me.

I also strongly prefer having a maid/domestic help for regular household chores. Both partners can work, have careers and hobbies — I don’t see much point in turning household chores into a daily competition. 😂

What I’m hoping to find

Someone around 22–27, 5'5"+, educated and working, ideally earning ₹15+ LPA.

I mention the salary preference because I believe financial compatibility is also an important part of compatibility in marriage. I’m currently earning around ₹33 LPA myself, and I’m looking for someone whose career, financial expectations and lifestyle are reasonably aligned with mine. It’s not about comparing salaries or putting a price tag on someone — I just think it’s better to be transparent about expectations from the beginning.

Preferably someone who is:

Independent and career-oriented

Comfortable with an eggitarian partner

From a Brahmin or Bhumihar family

Open-minded and reasonably compatible in terms of lifestyle and expectations

I’m currently in Pune, but I’m also open to Mumbai or Bangalore. If relocating to Pune isn’t practical because of your career, I’m happy to figure out the location together.

Of course, these are preferences, not an Excel sheet where every column needs a tick. 😄 Compatibility, communication, personality and shared values matter much more.

I’m looking for something serious that can eventually lead to marriage, but I’d like to start normally — talk, get to know each other and see if we actually enjoy each other’s company.

And yes, photos can be shared in DM. I’m a little shy about putting them publicly, so hopefully that’s understandable. 😅

I live a minimal Lifestyle but I am facing criticism from my family & friends how to deal with it?

I work for a reputed PBC as an AI Engineer.

I make around 1.85 Lakhs Rupees in hand after tax and EPF contribution.

Rent - 11000

Maid -5500

Groceries and Gas - 5000

Electricity - 1000

Misc - 2000

Gym - office

Internet - office

Quarterly Outing - office

Everything is covered under 25000 easily.

I never try to save this is how my expenses are.

My friends and relatives keeps gaslighting me what you will do with money spend it.

I am happy and i purchase what i require how to explain I am fulfilled and this is my requirement.

Anybody who has dealt with this. Please explain how did you go through this?
