i’ve been thinking a lot about how different the music industry feels now compared to even 5 to 10 years ago. not saying today’s music is bad there’s tons of great stuff but there are definitely some things i miss.
for me:
album rollouts with actual mystery remember when a surprise drop actually felt surprising? now everything leaks 2 weeks early or gets teased into the ground.
rappers actually rapping on beats that breathe not saying trap is dead, but i miss when beats had space, samples, and a groove you could sit in. less looped 808s, more soul chops.
mixtape culture datpiff, dj drops, freestyles over random beats, skits, and that raw unpolished energy. everything feels so sterile now.
beef that stayed in the booth okay maybe i'm romanticizing this one, but at least it gave us classic diss tracks. now it's just subtweets and podcast clips.

music videos that felt like events – not just visualizers or TikTok snippets, but full-on cinematic shorts (think Bad Romance, Single Ladies, Thriller)
the suspense of a single dropping on the radio, waiting for the world premiere, not knowing what it’d sound like until it actually played.
what about you? is it the way we discovered music? the way albums were rolled out? The sound itself? The lack of streaming playlists? The fashion? The interviews?

I put together a full breakdown of all the major eras and microgenres (because yes, I have too much time on my hands). Curious where y'all stand.
era 1: the blog era (late 2000s – early 2010s)
myspace, datpiff, and tumblr hipsters
the ogs: lil b (the godfather), soulja boy (first to really use social media), kid cudi, wale, b.o.b, asher roth, charles hamilton, the cool kids, danny brown.
vibe: mixtapes, blogspot pages, grainy tumblr gifs, “hipster hop.” everything felt diy and raw.
era 2: cloud rap & vaporwave aesthetic (early 2010s)
sad, ethereal, and heavily influenced by online visuals
the ogs: yung lean (ginseng strip changed everything), bladee / drain gang, bones (teamsesh), black kray, spaceghostpurrp (raider klan), a$ap mob (when they were still tumblr darlings).
vibe: lo-fi beats, sad boy lyrics, seapunk/vaporwave visuals. this is when rap started feeling like an internet art project.
era 3: the soundcloud gods (2015–2018)
the “mumble/emo” explosion
the ogs: xxxtentacion, lil uzi vert, playboi carti, lil yachty, ski mask, lil peep, trippie redd, juice wrld, lil tracy, smokepurpp & lil pump.
vibe: absolute chaos. distorted 808s, face tattoos, rainbow dreads, screaming into the mic, and crying in the next track. this was the era that made soundcloud a multi-million dollar machine.
era 4: emo / goth / witch house offshoots
the darker, more alternative lane
the ogs: wicca phase springs eternal (gothboiclique), døves, cold hart, zillakami (city morgue), nothing,nowhere.vibe: blending rap with metal, emo, and witch house. very black clothes, very sad, very aggressive.
era 5: experimental / industrial / hyperpop wing
for the beat nerds and noise enthusiasts
the ogs: jpegmafia, death grips, injury reserve, clipping., 100 gecs, dorian electra.
vibe: if you like your rap to sound like a glitchy playstation 2 exploding, this is your lane. experimental, boundary-pushing, and chaotic.
era 6: plugg, pluggnb, & rage (late 2010s–2020s)

the ogs: yeat (the current king), ken carson, destroy lonely (opium), summrs, autumn!, kankan (slayworld), sofaygo, weiland, lancey foux (uk).
vibe: synth-heavy, rage beats, mosh pits, and inventing new slang every 3 seconds. very high fashion, very “underground but actually mainstream.”

the ogs: joji (filthy frank turned r&b icon), bbno$ & yung gravy (meme-rap kings), rico nasty.
vibe: funny, viral, but surprisingly talented. the “haha” rappers who ended up being legit.
