ILs want to come for Christmas but won't organize it

To preface, I like my ILs. They are nice people overall, but they have terrible organization skills and a strong tendency to assume that we will change our plans to fit their last-minute decisions.

We live roughly 3 hours away by flight, so that has helped us setting boundaries a bit because if things are not organized, they are just not happening.

We usually do Christmas all together with the ILs and my family who live in the same area. This year my MIL and FIL wanted to celebrate it at our place, which we are very happy to do (less travelling for us! Also I love organising Christmas). The issue is that they insist that my partner's sibling and their family has to come too to have the whole family there, and the sibling and family are dragging their feet. They are the worst when it comes to deciding stuff at the last minute and then assume that we will somehow fit our schedule around them. Again lovely people otherwise when we do get to spend time with them, but this attitude is driving me bonkers. I had to teach partner to set boundaries with them in the past.

Anyway, we confirmed with them that Christmas would be at our place in June, and with my partner's blessing I helped my family booked their flights (non-refundable). We noticed that the price was much much higher than it used to be, so I warned the ILs that they needed to book their flights soon. This finally launched a discussion amongst them on how they would organize things, and it was decided the sibling would start looking for their accomodation (our house is too small for everyone and they're allergic to our pets so only my family will be staying with us and will help with the cleaning/setting up/cooking instead). They started suggesting some rental accomodation that they had found, but we turned it down as it was over an hour away from our place with very bad roads (especially in the winter) and made more manageable suggestions. Since then, no news. Supposedly, they're 'waiting for a reply' from one of the rentals (which one or where? God knows) since August.

They still haven't booked flights, which have now doubled in price (from something already stupidly expensive to 'could fly first class to another continent off season for that price'). My partner is afraid of asking them because he kind of knows that he won't get an answer we will like. They haven't cancelled yet either. At this point my bet is that they will say 'we can't come so please come home instead' and I am so glad that my family has their flights so we have a strong excuse to tell them to pound sand. I am absolutely certain that the whole family will not come, might have the MIL and FIL but even that is not certain. I offered my help to organize everything in the beginning so they have zero excuse.

Communication in my family is very straightforward and any behavior like that would have been called out with someone asking clearly 'are you coming or not?' with no offence taken if the person has changed their mind and doesn't want to come. According to my partner, not all families have our absence of subtlety lol so I am staying away from any communication on this issue and letting the partner sort it out. I am just so annoyed and needed to vent here!

Small kitchen and can't fit appliances

We moved in last year into an older house with a small kitchen. We love the style of the kitchen so we'd rather keep the counters etc, but we are struggling with the appliances. We originally kept the ones that the previous owners left, a dishwasher (left on my little drawing, apologies for my crappy drawing skills and perspective) and a washing machine, right of the sink on the drawing. The oven and drawers are on a diagonal line.

The issue is that both died - we left the dishwasher as it is with plans to change it later on (it is built in and will be a pita to remove, also we can do without) but had to change the washing machine. Issue was that none of the machines we found fit - we bought one with a depth of 55cm, but because of the pipes by the wall, there is about 2-3cm that won't fit and it is keeping us from opening the oven and drawers on its left side.

One solution I thought of would be to swap with the dead dishwasher because even if it won't fit entirely in depth it's not an issue since it would be next to the wall, but then fitting in a dishwasher would be even more difficult because I can't for the life of me find a dishwasher with a depth under 60cm. We could also do without a dishwasher but it's frustrating.

So, our options are:

1: move washing machine to dishwasher space, and get the smallest dishwasher we can find and pray that it won't keep the oven door from opening.

2: washing machine in dishwasher space too, but just give up on dishwasher and put in cabinets instead.

3: get plumber to move the pipes behind sink and cabinets to make the washing machine fit.

4: create plumbing (?) in shed to transform into a kind of utility room (electricity is already in and dryer is in there).

I am sure there are more options there (including redoing the whole kitchen, though that's not in our budget), and no idea which one would be the easiest/most convenient/cheapest to do, so I welcome any advice on this situation!

Anemia due to B9 deficiency?

Hi all,

After suffering for a good few months of extreme fatigue, bad nails/hair, brain fog etc, I finally was able to get a blood test which showed I had a deficiency in B9. I was prescribed B9 supplements but I was wondering if it will be enough.

In theory only my B9 was under the recommended range, but my ferritin was at 35 (normal range 15 to 150) and B12 at 194 (range 146 to 571). I am a bit confused that I was only prescribed B9 in this situation since I would assume my low B12/ferritin would be connected to the same issue? Or is it that taking B9 will solve the anemia and increase all three somehow?

I am a bit confused as I always assumed only iron levels were connected to anemia and never paid attention to my B vitamins levels so I am a bit lost, and I can't see my GP until next month so will have to make do with that treatment until then 🥲 I am so looking forward to being able to function again when this is sorted!

Update: Thank you everyone for your advice, you confirmed what I was suspecting from the results. I went to the pharmacy to ask what complements would be suitable in this situation and they told me that based on my blood tests, there was a good chance that getting my B9 up with the supplements I was prescribed would also up the B12 and Iron as the issues are likely connected. They advised me to wait a couple of weeks and see if the B9 is enough, if not then I will see with my GP if they could prescribe something for the B12/Iron. I still took some B12 supplements as they said it wouldn't hurt to take them, and as a vegetarian I probably should take them in any case :')

The CDS brought us a new colour this time!

Our Cat Distribution System has been stuck in a loop for the last few years, every time we adopt a cat we get a new one, like some kind of endless wait-list. It seems that the CDS has considered that our shed cat (current #1 on the wait-list) is adopted because it brought us a new friend! We'd seen him around, he is friendly with our shed cat and I suspect he was part of the same former colony that dispersed when the former tenants moved out. Today he decided he liked us and came for cuddles, so I guess he is now #2 on the wait-list. We'll be bringing him to get the snip next week or so (all our cats, indoors and outdoors, are neutered because we've enough cats with the CDS supply).

I am quite happy that the CDS is finally bringing us an orange cat - so far it was stuck on an endless supply of tabbies and black and whites, all females, so we needed to diversify our collection a bit.
