Arclight Dredge VS Esper Goryo's

Arclight Dredge VS Esper Goryo's

I'm a boomer Modern player looking to re-enter and participate in a small local Modern group of about 8 people. I only know that the meta will involve Esper Goryo's and Ruby Storm. No tournament but we will be playing Best-of-Three pickup games with each other.

That being said, what is the strategy for playing against Esper Goryo's with Arclight Dredge?

I know we can:

- Lava Dart our own Phoenix/Stinkweed in response to their Solitude or lifelinker.

- Use Stinkweed Imp to trade with their bigger threats if we really need to.

- Level up Artists Talent to try and push past the lifegain with Darts, Chiils and Conflag.

Core Game Concepts of Magic and EDH

When someone knows the basic rules of Magic/Commander and wants to understand the game further, I always guide them to these two resources:

The Level One Articles by Reid Duke

Who's the Beatdown? by Mike Flores

These articles are catered to 1v1 play but many of the core ideas like card advantage still translate over to EDH. That brings me to a few questions for everyone:

  • How long have you been playing Magic and separately, EDH?

  • Which of these concepts do you think play the biggest part in the average game of EDH?

  • Which of these concepts do you think are the most difficult to grasp or be aware of?

  • Are there any other concepts of gameplay you think are critical for players to understand?

I was wrong about Elves

There was a thread recently where the discussion was the top performing creature types.

I figured the classics like Goblins, Elves, Slivers and Eldrazi were up there. As a lifelong Zombie fan who's pulled off some turn 5-6 kills with infinite combos, I also grouped them with that squad.

One of the replies was something like "Elves have the most competitive potential, and it's not even close."

My Onslaught-era tribal feud kneejerk reaction was to call BS.

But I proxied up a Marwyn list that's 1/4th of the cost of my Wilhelt deck and it wins on turn four 50% of the time, without any gamechangers, through a decent amount of interaction. I've even gotten a turn three kill by pumping Marwyn and two other dorks by passing Umbral Mantle between them. And I'm sure it's not even optimal by Elf enjoyer standards.

They're just so goddamned fast and consistent, it's actually unbelievable.

Looking for my first cEDH deck for a small isolated weekly group

  • We are intentionally keeping our first choices secret from each other, so I have no idea what anyone else is playing yet and vice versa.

  • We are allowing fully proxied decks.

  • We will likely not be playing each deck as optimally as possible, at least at first. This is more of a "dip our toes in and see if we like it" situation. I've played cEDH many years ago but it's changed dramatically since.

  • In competitive 60-card formats I enjoy aggro/combo and tempo decks the most. Dredge, Delver and Splinter Twin were my top favorites.

  • In EDH I enjoy decks with explosive potential like [[Wilhelt]], [[Marwyn]] and [[Witherbloom, the Balancer]].

  • Favorite colors are black > blue > green > red > white.

  • I've been playing for over 20 years and am no stranger to complicated lines of play, but I also don't really want to have to consult a spreadsheet as a requirement to win.

PreDH Akroma Feedback

The Decklist: https://moxfield.com/decks/ORXJe1yanUyNN2WGckR--g

The Power Level: Bracket 3 Battlecruiser-style gameplay with some occasional game changers. We try to avoid running them unless the deck needs a bit of extra speed or consistency. Which is why I'm running [[Ancient Tomb]] and [[Mana Vault]].

The Challenge: Build an EDH deck using only classic borders that can mostly stand up to modern bracket 3 decks.

I'm aware that I probably won't be playing on the same level as everyone else but I'm fine with that. Mostly looking for any hidden gems; monowhite is my least played color.
