Rejected international transfer still missing after 8 months – how long can a SWIFT trace with an intermediary bank take?
I am hoping someone with experience in international banking or SWIFT payments can help me understand what should normally happen in a case like this.
An international transfer from Canada to my Trade Republic account was rejected in December 2025 and was supposed to be returned to the sender’s RBC account.
Eight months later, the money is still not back.
Current status:
- RBC opened an investigation and provided the MT103.
- Trade Republic confirmed that the funds had been sent back to an intermediary bank.
- Trade Republic later said they had been conducting a SWIFT trace with UniCredit / Austria Bank AG since mid-July, but there has been no further update.
- RBC has also contacted the intermediary bank, but has not received a response either.
- The funds are still outstanding.
Both banks now appear to be waiting on the intermediary bank.
My questions are:
How long can a SWIFT trace like this realistically take?
Is it normal for an intermediary bank not to respond to either side for several weeks/months?
If both the sending and receiving banks have the MT103 and investigation reference, what would normally be the next escalation step?
I’m not looking for account-specific support, just trying to understand the banking process and whether this timeframe is normal.
Any insight from people familiar with correspondent banking or SWIFT investigations would be appreciated.
