Former Labour leader says divisions remain
Former Labour leader and ex-Auckland Mayor Phil Goff believes divisions still remain within the National Party caucus, despite the outcome of today's meeting and confidence vote.
"I don't think you can go a third time and say that you're calling for a vote of confidence in yourself," Goff told reporters on the parliamentary tiles.
"Calling for a vote of confidence in yourself suggests that there is a question about whether there is actually confidence."
Asked whether he thinks the electorate will punish National for the move, Goff said it was hard to know, but he believed most voters would continue to premise their choice on the issues they care about, such as the cost of living, healthcare and education.
However, he noted Luxon had a real problem on his hands "if the purported challengers to you are amongst your best-performing ministers".
"To dismiss your best-performing ministers because they're unhappy with your performance wouldn't be a good look for the Prime Minister.
"I don't think that's an option open to him."
