Parsing ipv6 with pure bash is actually my villain origin story

Genuinely thought writing a quick validation script for some access logs would take 10 minutes. ipv4? fine, simple regex, four octets, we move on.

But ipv6 is just cruel. The double colons, the omitted leading zeros, the hex formatting. Trying to catch all the valid shorthand abbreviations using just standard sed and grep is completely rotting my brain.

I was staring at a helpful guide just trying to map out every single possible way a v6 address can be legally formatted in the wild, and about halfway through I just realized doing this in pure shell is a massive mistake.

Why do we torture ourselves trying to build bulletproof parsers in bash? Im literally just going to pipe the logs to a python script with the ipaddress module tomorrow. My regex days are over tbh.

Which free tools actually handle variable fonts without messing up spacing?

I grabbed some variable font files for a client last week and tested them in the usual programs. Inkscape kept the weights looking right but the spacing went off at intermediate weights. LibreOffice just skipped the variable axes completely. I ended up exporting static versions by hand, which took a couple hours. If anyone here actually works with variable fonts in open source software on a regular basis, I'm curious which setup keeps spacing consistent. Screenshots would help. The marketing talks up how flexible these fonts are, but the practical experience seems to lag behind

is there a canonical source for the Rocinante’s full interior layout?

i’m trying to figure out how the Rocinante actually fits together as a living space.

the schematics are useful for the big stuff, but they don't really answer the practical questions. where exactly are the bunks? how are the heads and showers arranged? how much of the ship is actually crew space vs. engineering, storage, and machinery?

the show gives us bits and pieces, but it's hard to tell how much of what we see is supposed to represent the actual layout and how much is just what the set needed

i've checked a few wiki pages, but a lot of them seem to mix book details, show details, and fan assumptions

for anyone who's read the books closely, is there a specific chapter, appendix, guide, or other official source that gives a more complete breakdown of the Rocinante's interior?

i'm mostly looking for stuff that's actually stated or shown in canon, rather than fan-made deck plans

How much does your graphic design background actually help with Etsy listings or is it overrated

Genuine question for anyone else who does design work professionally and also runs a shop. My background is in freelance graphic design and I keep hearing it gives you a huge advantage on Etsy: better photos, stronger branding, cleaner mockups. And yeah, it helps. I'm not going to pretend otherwise.

But here's where I get skeptical. The algorithm doesn't care how good your banner looks. I've seen shops with objectively terrible branding outperform mine in search, and it's been bugging me for months. The SEO and tag game seems to matter way more than visual polish, at least for getting found in the first place.

What I'm trying to figure out is whether design skills actually convert better once someone lands on your listing, or if the lift is smaller than people claim. I don't have a clean way to test this without running two separate shops with identical products and different visual treatments, which is obviously not happening.
