Gaming laptop or desktop in 2026?

Saw this setup shared by someone in a Discord community and it got me thinking. If you were starting from scratch today, would you go with a gaming laptop or build a desktop? Feels like both sides have gotten way better lately, so curious what everyone would pick.

Would a new Steam Machine be DOA... or actually sell this time?

Just watched a concept/review video and honestly... it got me thinking. SteamOS is in a much better place now than it was 10 years ago. Do you think a new Steam Machine would still flop, or was Valve just way too early the first time?

Do ppl actually upgrade every gen or is that just YouTube land?

Online it looks like everyone upgrades GPU every 1–2 yrs. But IRL I feel like most ppl: skip gens/ wait for sales/ upgrade only when stuff dies. So how often u actually upgrading ur rig?

My coworker thinks everything from AliExpress is basically fake… and now I don’t know how to explain it

We recently got a new teammate at work, been here like a week or so. Cool person overall, but she has this very strong opinion that anything from AliExpress = cheap knockoff / low quality stuff.

At some point she noticed my gear (I had a few small accessories I ordered from AliExpress), and she straight up asked if I “trust stuff like that.” I kinda laughed it off at first, but then she started going on about how she’d never buy anything online unless it’s from “real stores” because AliExpress is basically just random factories copying brands. I tried showing her that it’s not always like that, like you can actually get legit stuff depending on the seller, reviews, etc. But she was still not convinced at all. Then she saw one of my items and just said:

“Yeah… this is definitely one of those cheap mass-produced things.” At that point I just gave up arguing tbh.

Anyway, I’m curious has anyone else dealt with this kind of reaction when people hear you buy from AliExpress? Like they instantly assume it’s all fake or trash? Also kinda random but if anyone has good AliExpress discount codes which i found like REDDIT29P lately, feel free to drop them here..

Is buying used GPUs the smartest move right now or a ticking time bomb?

With new GPUs being expensive, I keep seeing more people go second-hand (especially last gen high end cards). And i noticed that many used GPUs have sold on Amazon and AE or anything else. On paper it makes sense, like it have better price/performance, and maybe still strong raw power, or that has tons of listings after upgrades. But also have these questions like the mining history concerns/ unknown wear/ no warranty etc. And tbh, would you buy a used high end GPU today or only go new?

Are people overusing the term CPU bottleneck in modern gaming builds?

Every build post has someone saying “your CPU will bottleneck your GPU”. But in real usage, it feels way more situational, like the resolution matters, game engine matters, and target FPS matters. So is “bottleneck fear” actually helpful advice or just Reddit parroting?

Is AliExpress in the EU getting worse… or are we just paying the “compliance tax” now?

Not trying to start drama, but I’ve been using AliExpress for years in the EU and it feels like something has quietly shifted. Prices used to feel like “China cheap → long shipping but worth it.” Now it’s more like “still from China, but EU fees + VAT + random handling costs + slower shipping anyway.”

And I get it, EU regulations are tighter now, especially with import VAT rules and platform responsibility. But from a buyer POV it kinda feels like the whole “direct-from-factory bargain” vibe is fading. At the same time, I see people saying:

“It’s still cheap, you’re just used to unrealistic pricing”

“Good, finally level playing field for EU sellers”

“Blame customs, not AliExpress”

“Temu did it better”

So I’m curious how others in the EU are feeling about this: Are you still seeing real value on AliExpress in 2026, or has it basically turned into just another Amazon like marketplace with extra steps? Also genuine question, if everything is getting taxed/regulated anyway, what’s even the point of ordering direct anymore vs just buying local or Amazon?

AI PCs actually useful or just marketing in 2026?

Every laptop/desktop ad I see now is basically shouting “AI CPU / NPU / Copilot ready” everywhere. But tbh… wtf ppl actually doing with this stuff? So far it just feels like: the slightly better bg tasks, or some Win features nobody asked for, and a ton of branding/hype. I'd like to know has anyone actually changed their buying decision bc of “AI features”, or is this just the new cycle all over again?

Do you buy the newest laptop, or just wait for last year's model to go on sale?

Been looking at laptops recently and can't decide which camp I'm in. The new 2026 stuff looks pretty nice. Better battery life, stronger iGPUs, better efficiency overall... but then I see last year's higher end models getting huge discounts and suddenly the decision gets a lot harder...

Some of them are going for way less than launch price now, and on paper they still seem more than powerful enough for what most people do. So when you're shopping for a laptop, do you usually go for the newest generation, or do you wait and grab last year's model once the prices drop? Feels like we're at a point where most laptops are already fast enough for everyday use, which makes it harder for me to justify paying extra just to have the latest hardware. What would you do?

What's a laptop design trend you absolutely hate?

Some laptop problems don't even show up until after you've bought the thing. For me, it's loud fans. I can spend hours comparing specs and reviews, then the laptop shows up and sounds like it's about to take off just because I opened a few Chrome tabs. And another one is manufacturers getting rid of every port known to mankind. At that point you're basically forced to carry a dongle everywhere.

What laptop design choice drives you crazy? Bad screens, weird keyboard layouts, wobbly hinges, tiny arrow keys, trackpads with a mind of their own... What's your biggest laptop related annoyance or regret?

Is 16GB RAM actually enough anymore? How many tabs do you guys have open?

Fired up my laptop today and wasn't even doing anything that demanding. Had maybe 10-15 Chrome tabs open, Spotify in the background, a couple random apps, and somehow my RAM usage was already around 70%.

Ngl, that's when I finally understood why people get so annoyed about laptops with soldered RAM and no upgrade path. So now I'm curious what are you guys running these days? If you were buying a laptop in 2026, would you still be comfortable with 16GB, or is 32GB basically the safer choice now? And for those still on 16GB, does it feel totally fine, or are you starting to hit the limits?
