Slow bonding over time?

These two little taters (5.5 yo neutered male Maverick and 4yo female Mabel) have now had 2 introductions in a neutral bonding pen, and everything was going by the book for nearly 2 hours. And then both times escalated to a pignado which we quickly stopped with a towel before any blood could be shed. They’ve been living side-by-side in a C&C with a divider very peacefully for almost 3 weeks except for the 2 bonding attempts.

In the neutral space, the boy seems to be trying to be dominant, and the girl was giving him space, ignoring him, walking away, etc, then after they had a couple tandem naps and I was getting really hopeful, she decided she didn’t want to give in anymore, and things escalated pretty quickly.

Should I keep trying? Are there some piggies who can eventually settle in after repeated whirls of fur, or is neighbor life inevitable for these two?

Our boy lived peacefully with his girlfriend for 4 years until she crossed the rainbow bridge last month. This new girl we got from the shelter with hopes that she could be his buddy, so we don’t know much about her social history, but she’s friendly and has been well-cared for. We’re completely attached to both now, and we’d love to see them share a space, though we’ll keep them side-by-side if they can’t work it out. How do you know when to call it quits on bonding?

We did it!

The lawn is out, and cardboard barrier, dry stream, plants and mulch are in! Looking forward to filling in more over time, but we’re happy with the progress! Colorado Front Range 5B 😊

Looking for bonding hope (and tips if you have ‘em!)

Our 5.5yo neutered boar lost his girlfriend of over 4 years a few weeks ago 😢 and we’ve been trying to get him comfy with a new friend. We worked with a rescue to try to introduce him to a pair of older sisters, but he and the dominant girl couldn’t work it out, and we returned them to the rescue after a pignado (fur pulled but no blood).

Next we found a 4yo girl alone at a shelter, and she had good health reports, was friendly and obviously well-cared-for and used to being handled. After a settling in period we tried them side-by-side, and the were friendly (rumbling boy, curious girl, grooming through the divider, popcorns galore, and all around relaxed neighborly life).

We introduced them in a neutral pen with hay and veggies galore, watched them interact perfectly (eating, sniffing, rumblestrutting, mounting, and boundaries were being communicated and worked out without a single teeth chatter).

Then after an hour something we couldn’t discern set off teeth chattering and quickly escalated to a whirl of fur pulling (no blood) that we broke up with a towel. Separated back to side by side, back to relaxed life (we’ve even seen him laying along the divider while she tries to groom him through the bars 🥲).

I know the fur-flying whirl is not a good sign for a first introduction. Is there hope to try again? Has anyone had piggies like ours who came back to successfully bond after that? Any tips for trying again? It’s been over a week since that first attempt.

Edging tips?

We are coming to the edge of our front yard in the lawn-removal process, so I’m looking for ideas and tips for the next step. What kind of edging would you suggest to prevent the neighbor’s lawn from growing back into ours? We plan to put in native plants, mulch, a dry stream bed, and use cardboard for weed/grass suppression. Thanks in advance for sharing your experience! Colorado Front Range 5B

Just getting started

We have a long ways to go, but the lawn is almost all dug out, and native plants, a dry stream bed, and hopefully lots of beauty is on the way!

Skittles tank down the generations

I love seeing how every wild type is a little different! This one has a bit of blue but a couple red polka dots!
