What’s life like at KFUPM for international students?
I’m in a bit of a dilemma and could really use some honest input from people who’ve actually experienced either side of this.
I have acceptances from KFUPM for their MSc in Cybersecurity and few Russell Group universities in the UK, and their satellite campuses in dubai. On paper both are solid options, but I’m finding it really hard to get genuine, unfiltered accounts of what life is actually like at KFUPM, everything online feels either like official marketing or vague positivity. The answers I get are same old “ranked 67th, ranked 1st in arab region, etc etc” but nobody has talked about the student life there.
A bit of context about what I’m looking for: I want the actual study abroad experience, I am least bothered about using the master as a tunnel to employment. Not looking for just a degree, but living somewhere new, having a social life, being able to explore and breathe between lectures. I’ve done intense study before and I’m not looking to repeat that 24/7 grind lifestyle.
Honest questions for anyone who studied at KFUPM or anyone who can provide any insights:
- What does social life genuinely look like day-to-day for a grad student? Is there anything going on outside campus or is that basically it?
- How heavy is the academic workload for MSc students? Is there any breathing room or is it back-to-back all semester?
- How is dhahran for exploring? The options I have from other countries would allow me to travel and explore alot but dhahran seems like a isolated base for saudi aramco.
- Honestly, would you do it again for the experience, not just the degree?
Trying to make the right call on something that’ll define the next year or two of my life. Any input appreciated.
