Hey everyone, I’m 19 and trying to figure out what to do orthodontically because I’m honestly unhappy with both the function and aesthetics of my teeth/jaw situation.
I had braces through 14, 15. My ortho at the time said I had relatively short roots / close to a 1:1 crown-to-root ratio (I attached a pic/X-ray), and they warned me, but they also said they could do premolars extractions for a “full” correction. I was scared of getting teeth removed back then, so we went with IPR instead.
The braces aligned my molars better, but my overjet never really got fixed. Right now I still have around a 4mm overjet. I also stopped wearing retainers consistently for a while as a kid, so now:
- my midline shifted to the right
- I have slight gaps/openings between some teeth
- lip incompetence
- slight TMJ issues on the left side
- my side profile bothers me a lot aesthetically
I feel like the overjet/lip incompetence especially makes my profile look worse from the side, and it’s been affecting my confidence a lot recently.
I recently moved to Orange County, California for college, and ortho consultations here seem insanely expensive. I’m trying to figure out:
- Would Invisalign even be able to fix this, or should I realistically do braces again?
- If I already had IPR before, would doing more be risky?
- With short roots, how dangerous is moving teeth again? I’m honestly scared of root resorption or my teeth becoming loose/falling out.
I’d really appreciate honest opinions or similar experiences.
